Commentary

It is close to half past 3 in the morning here but what Rutherford and Hope produced tonight will keep us up and mesmerised for a while. This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with Sourabh Aggarwal. We will see you soon!

Shai Hope (West Indies Captain) : We wanted to turn that 11 match losing streak. The consistency showed with the bat and the ball is an area that we will want to replicate as we move ahead. Easy paced surface. Little slow at times. That was an adjustment that we wanted to make out there. We have the luxury of Justin Greaves now in our team. What he did deserves a special mention. Rutherford is leading from the front with his batting. Has has put in a lot of hard work. I am more disappointed that I didn't win it for my team. There should be a habit of finishing games. It is exactly what I told Sherfane when he returned at the end as well, we need to be more clinical but happy to see the overall result for us.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Bangladesh Captain) : Yes, we were satisfied with the total that we got. 294 was a very good score at this surface. It was a tough day for the bowlers. But special credit to how Rutherford and Hope played. We began well. It was heartening to see what Nahid, Taskin and Tanzim had done for us in the initial overs but we did not get wickets in the middle overs. We learnt many things today. We did commit some mistakes but we will focus on the positives and 2 matches are still left in the series. We are confident to ensure putting up a better performance in those couple of matches that lie ahead of us.

Sherfane Rutherford (Player of the Match): The key is working hard, I plan to work hard on my game, to stay disciplined and give myself the best chance to perform well. Good to see it coming off. At the start the plan was to hit the gaps and get the singles, I start a bit slow but I know that I can always make up as long as I am there at the end. It is always good batting with him (Hope), he told me to take it deep. I would like to be consistent, by the grace of God hopefully I will continue scoring runs

Highest successful run chase for the West Indies at Warner Park. Highest successful chase for West Indies against Bangladesh. The last time when the hosts defeated Bangladesh in an ODI was back in December 2018. A streak of 11 games has been snapped!

The first runs of the chase came in the form of a boundary when Brandon King was able to put one away in only the 2nd ball of the innings against Taskin Ahmed. Lewis got his first run after 12 balls though but 16 of the first 20 runs for the hosts came in boundaries.

West Indies were throwing their bats around. They were not being allowed to rotate the strike easily. This frustrated King and forced the false shot which was given LBW by the umpire as the hosts lost their opening wicket with 27 runs on the board in the 8th over. Nahid Rana trapped Lewis only 2 balls later as West Indies lost both their openers in quick succession.

Shai Hope used the pace of Rana to get a boundary through the point region in the first ball that he faced in the innings to get off the mark in a confident manner against a side whom he averaged 70 in this format, before today. The first six of the chase came in the 19th over from the bat of Shai Hope, which also saw brought up the half century stand between him and Keacy Carty.

75 dot balls played by the home side in the first 20 overs. The pressure was building and Rishad Hossain broke the 67 run stand in the 22nd over. Hope brought up his 26th ODI fifty in the 27th over, his 5th against Bangladesh. No boundaries were scored for 28 balls in between the 25th to 30th over in a period which was a bit of a lull for West Indies.

Rutherford began the 32nd over with a boundary and ended that over against Mehidy with a six that brought up the half century stand between him and Shai Hope. The duo showed impressive match awareness and chose their battles wisely to keep up with the scoring rate. Not long after, it was 5 consecutive fifties for Rutherford in this brilliant purple patch as he smashed Rana for a six and a boundary in the 36th over.

Hope and Rutherford's 99 run stand was the highest of the game as Hope began taking a liking to the leg spin of Rishad with the home crowd beginning to dance and celebrate, sensing an outside chance of a West Indian win. But Mehidy reintroduced himself into the attack and accounted for his counterpart in the 38th over. Rutherford continued playing his delightful shots as we entered the last 10 overs with 83 runs to win for the hosts.

The duo of Greaves and Rutherford put an absolute show in the final few overs, taking the game away from Bangladesh. Rutherford was particularly severe on the bowlers as he deposited one six after the other, bringing up his first ever ODI century. 50 runs were scored in the 5 overs between the 40th and 45th over. If someone wanted to gather evidence on whether or not the wheels began coming off for the visitors, they would only need to go as far as watching the manner in which Rutherford got to his century.

The 47th over began with 3 consecutive sixes. But the first of those were actually overthrows by the Bangladesh fielders that got Rutherford to the brilliant milestone. He left the scene with his side needing 7 runs from 20 balls. In the end, this is a special win for the men in maroon.
