That brings us to the end of what has been a topsy turvy ride. This series was packed with some enthralling action throughout. While the weather played its part in the first Test, the second one was always headed towards a result. In the end, it would be fair to say that the better team won. West Indies had their moments. But time and time again, they squandered their chances of putting their foot through the door. Though, there are some bright spots. Their pace battery has shown potential and Motie has been impressive all around. Athanaze and Hodge put on a good fight with the bat in the fourth innings of the first Test. Yet, it is about patching it altogether and stringing in consistent performances. For South Africa, Mulder's all-round contribution and de Zorzi's returns at the top order have been the positives alongside Maharaj's stellar performance. The two teams would now switch into T20 mode for a 3-match series that begins in a week's time. And we would be there to call the action. For now, Darpan Tikiya signs off on the behalf of Pragadeesh and the entire team.
Temba Bavuma (South Africa Captain): Emotions were a bit up and down. It was a proper game of Test Cricket. The weather played its part. Both teams were in the game. Fortunately, it went our way in the end. Obviously, the quality and the experience of the bowling gets us through some tricky situations. Rabada leading the pace attack and Keshav Maharaj in the spin department. They exploited the conditions well. More the guys play, better they get. We can really become a formidable side.
Kraigg Braithwaite (West Indies Captain): We didn't put up enough runs. That was very crucial in this game. It was quite similar to the first Test. The idea was to have some intent. In the first innings, we had some rash shots. They also came at the wrong time. We did not do a good enough job to put ourselves in front in the game. We had to fight back and we fought back well. The sky is the limit. Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph have been exciting. And we also have an experienced Kemar Roach in the team.
Keshav Maharaj (Player of the Series) - It was one of our favourite Test matches for sure. We are going through a transition phase and there were a lot of positives to take from this game. As I said, Test cricket is always the priority. I always have a red ball in my bag. I always stick to my basics and still work various lengths and execute it. (On playing under Bavuma) He trusts spin and backs spin. He has always been someone close to me and I enjoy playing under him
Wiaan Mulder (Man of the Match) - Haven't played a Test match, so my aim is to play this series first. I tried to play as much cricket as possible. I keep doing my best and keep things as simple as I can. I bowled wobble seam deliveries and managed to swing the ball. I am happy with what I did
South Africa win by 40 runs and seal the series 1-0.
One can only wonder what is going through Jayden Seales mind right now. After he played the final shot towards David Bedingham, he stood there in disbelief. His body language oozed dejection and he wore an despondent expression on his face. He had just hit droolworthy boundary off the previous ball. Before that, he had bowled an excellent spell in the morning to set this match up for the West Indies. Yet, with victory in sight, he flicked this straight to short leg, who pouched it.
With that, Maharaj became the spinner with the highest number of Test scalps for South Africa and the Proteas sealed the series. A thrilling end to what was an absolute rollercoaster of a ride. On day 1, South Africa were reduced to 97/9. Yet, they kept on fighting. The last pair put on a 63-run stand. In the end, the win margin was just 40 runs. Credit must go to Markram and Verreynne as well, who made vital contributions with the bat in the second innings.
West Indies' batters were guilty of playing some poor shots today. Motie's effort kept them in the hunt. But in the end, the target was always going to be stiff after losing the top order rather cheaply. South Africa were too good for the hosts. Don't forget Wiaan Mulder who made handy contributions both bat and ball.
A bit of commentator's curse to bring us to the conclusion of an exciting Test Match. With that wicket, Maharaj becomes the spinner with the highest number of wickets for South Africa and the Proteas win their 10th consecutive series against the West Indies.
