Belgium face Morocco in their next match on Sunday while Canada take on 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia on the same day.

Belgium might be celebrating today but their performance wasn't good enough and need to improve going forward if they are make a deep run in the tournament.

The Maples Leaves were full of energy and creativity in the opening stanza but struggled to keep that up after the break. That penalty miss from Alphonso Davies proved costly for them and are left to wonder what could've been.

And that's all she wrote! Belgium get a fortuitous 1-0 victory to start their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with three points while Canada are left to rue their missed chances.

The Red Devils must do better in the second half offensively and also not allow Canada too much time and space on the ball as they've looked dangerous in attack. 

Alphonso Davies had the opportunity to put them in front from the penalty spot but his weak effort was saved and now, Canada have paid the price for it as they find themselves a goal down at the break despite an impressive display

The teams are out on the pitch with Belgium singing their national anthem first.

In their only previous World Cup appearance in 1986, Canada lost all three of their group matches to bow out in the first round. Can they pick up a shock win tonight?

Belgium will play in their 14th World Cup. No European team has qualified more times without winning it. The side's best performance at the tournament is a third-place finish at the 2018 edition in Russia. 

The kick-off is less than 30 minutes from now.

Belgium and Canada have never met in an official match before. Their only previous encounter came in an international friendly in Ottawa, way back in June 1989, and it ended with a 2-0 win for the Red Devils, courtesy of goals from Marc Degryse and Jan Ceulemans.

Canada, meanwhile, will be playing their first World Cup tournament since 1986. The Maples Leaves finished atop the CONCACAF qualifying group in the third round with 28 points in 14 games, courtesy of fine performances from Cyle Larin, Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies.
