Don't forget to tune in for the live coverage of the second quarter-final game between Netherlands and Argentina that will start soon on Sportskeeda! Good night!
PENALTIES CRO 4-2 BRA.
Croatia shatter Brazillian dreams on penalties as their dogged defensive performance and nerves on the penalties help them progress to the semi-finals.
Neymar opened the scoring in injury time of extra-time's first half but Petkovic's 117th minute goal took the game into penalties. Croatia converted all of their penalties while Brazil missed two, as the game ended in a 4-2 win for Croatia on penatlies.
CROATIA TO GO FIRST.
The two teams could not be separated after two hours of play and now the semi-final spot will be decided on penalties.
Neymar thought he had scored the decisive goal of the game right at death in the first half of extra time but Croatia pulled level in dramatic fashion with two substitutes, Petkovic and Orsic combining for the 117th minute equalizer.
Late drama in the game as Croatia pull level out of nowhere. Substitute Mislav Orsic sends in a good cross from one of his first touches of the game and Petkovic drops a shoulder for a simple left-footed finish. The ball takes a deflection off Silva as Alisson can only see the ball going in.
Neymar breaks the deadlock in the dying moments of the first half of extra time to put Brazil 1-0 up. All the pressure now on Croatia as they will need to score a goal in the final 15 minutes of the game to have a shot at making it to the semi-finals. They have not recorded a shot on target yet.
Will we be able to see a goal? Let's find out.
Croatia have been equal to Brazil's attacks and held their own against their incessant attacks. Livakovic kept his team in the game and faces and it will be interesting to see just how long Croatia can withstand Brazilian attacks.
Both teams were able to produce very few chances throughout the game as Croatia held a solid line against Brazil. The five-time champions failed to create much space in the final third and will be looking to resume the play with even higher intensity. Croatia will certainly be the happier side heading into the dressing room.
Neymar is on the verge of making history as he can overtake Pele as Brazil's all-time top-scorer. He has 76 goals while the legendary striker has a goal tally of 77 goals.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has said that the game against Brazil will be their most demanding one thus far. He told a press conference (via Al Jazeera):
“I believe that this match will be the most demanding one. A great opponent and a great challenge for us. We have had 11 matches at these two World Cups, and we lost one. I wish this match came a bit later. I wish it waited for us later [in the tournament], but life is such.”
Brazil coach Tite praised Croatian players in a press conference. He said (via The National News):
“They have individual quality and collective quality as well as a resilience and persistence. We are aware of their virtues, but my focus is on maintaining our standards. Whoever plays best will go through.”
He defended Brazilian players' celebrations, stating that people criticizing their celebrations do not know about Brazilian culture. He added:
“I am very sorry, but I will not make comment on those who do not know Brazilian history or Brazilian culture, the way each and every one of us is. To those, I leave that noise aside. I want my connection to be to my job, to the people who I relate to, to those who relate to my work. They know how much I respect the Brazilian history. Those are the ones I give my heart to. I respect the culture."
Croatia have never faced a South American team in the knockout stage of the competition. Though they have lost four of their last five games against teams from CONMEBOL in the World Cup.

Croatia make a couple of changes as Mario Pašalić gets his first-ever start in a World Cup, replacing Bruno Petković and Borna Sosa returns to the lineup in place of Borna Barišić.
