World No 1 Amit Panghal loses to Colombia's Rio silver medallist in R16 of Olympics 2021 in men's flyweight category

Amit Panghal's hopes to win a gold medal for India ended got dashed as he failed to go past the Round of 16 in the men's flyweight category. The World No 1 lost to Colombia's Rio silver medallist by a split decision of 4-1.

Martinez began the first round completely on the front foot. But, Amit Panghal was well aware of his surroundings and defended nicely. He landed some nice counters and impressed four out of five judges.

Martinez raised the ante in the second round and landed more punches and body shots. Amit was completely taken aback and saw himself mostly near the ropes. This time, four judges awarded the round to the Colombian.

Martinez showed no signs of slowing down and had enough stamina to continue for a couple of more rounds. Once again, Amit had no answer to his opponent's quick feet movements and ferocious punches. The signature left uppercut of Amit was completely missing from the game.

Five judges awarded the final round to Martinez as he won the tie 28-29, 29-27, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.

The referee raises the hands of Colombian. Amit Panghal's Olympics sojourn ends. The World No 1 fails to go past the R16. All five judges award the third round to Martinez.

1st Round: Martinez is applying the pressure but is struggling with the southpaw stance from Amit.

1st Round: Amit is throwing less punches but gets more accuracy. Yuberjen is on the attacking and lands some right punches as well.

1st Round: Yuberjen is controlling the tempo of the bout. Amit is near the ropes but he is coming with strong backhand punches.
