Avinash Sable sets a National Record in men's 3000m Steeplechase at Olympics 2021, fails to progress to finals

India's Avinash Sable started the race on a slow note staying at the back far behind the pacemakers. However, he slowly and steadily made inroads. After the first 1000m, he found himself in the 6th position.

After 2000m, Avinash was positioned seventh and started to accelerate. He was even the pacemaker for a very short period of time. But, unfortunately, he got exhausted and dropped down places in the last two laps. In the end, he finished in the 7th position in his heat with a timing of 8:18.12 minutes.

However, that won't be enough for Avinash as he failed to progress to the finals. After the completion of two heats, there are six runners who have a better timing than him and have not taken the first three places. Kenya's Abhraham Kibiwot finished first in Avinash's heats with a timing of 8:12.25 minutes.

06:34 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash Sable fails to qualify for the finals! Canada's John Gay, who finished in the sixth position in Heat 1 has a timing of 8:16.99. That would mean, Avinash is seventh on the list with one more heat remaining.

Only the top six qualify. Feel bad for Avinash Sable who won't be participating in the Olympics 2021 final despite setting a Personal Best and National Record!

06:31 (IST)30 JUL 2021

After the first 1000m, Avinash was in the sixth position and after another 1000m, he was in the seventh. He was momentarily the pacemaker as well, but dropped down in the final two laps and ended up in the seventh position.

06:29 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash Sable has broken his Personal Best record! His timing of 8:18.12 helps him finish in the seventh position.

06:27 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Kenya's Abhraham Kibiwot finishes first and qualifies automatically to the finals.

06:26 (IST)30 JUL 2021

And, Avinash Sable crosses the line. Seventh or eighth. We will have the official confirmation soon.

06:26 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Kenya and Ethiopia jostling with each other for the top position.

06:26 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash is nowhere near the top 6 pack.

06:25 (IST)30 JUL 2021

There is the bell. Final lap coming.

06:25 (IST)30 JUL 2021

There is the hurdle followed by water. Avinash puts both his foot on it before crossing.

06:25 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Eritrea is leading and is followed by Kenya, Ethiopia, and USA.

06:24 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Two laps to go and Avinash is in the seventh position.

06:24 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash is slowing down. Can't say whether it is exhaustion or saving the energy for the final lap.

06:23 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Kenya is the pacemaker and Avinash is in the fifth position.

06:23 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash has dropped places. He is now fourth.

06:22 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash slows down and finishes the lap on a second place.

06:21 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash has progressed further and is now the pacemaker!

06:21 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Well, Avinash seems to be in the seventh position in the second lap. No slips in this lap as well.

06:20 (IST)30 JUL 2021

First lap completed. No runner has slipped in the waters.

06:20 (IST)30 JUL 2021

The pacemaker is constantly changing. Earlier it was Ethiopia, then Kenya, and now Great Britain.

06:19 (IST)30 JUL 2021

There is the hurdle and Avinash has slowly and steadily made progress. Four runners are behind him now.

06:18 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash has dropped to the second last position, but remember this is a 3000m steeplechase race. Not a sprint.

06:18 (IST)30 JUL 2021

There is the gunshot! First three automatically qualifies.

06:17 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Abraham Kibiwot has won a silver medal for Kenya at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

06:14 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Athletes have reached their mark.

06:13 (IST)30 JUL 2021

And, the athletes are warming up. We can see Avinash Sable in light blue color.

06:10 (IST)30 JUL 2021

The first heat is over and Ethiopia wins it. Quite a long distance between the top 3 and the rest of the pack.

06:07 (IST)30 JUL 2021

None of the 2019 World Championships medallists are in Avinash Sable's heats. But do keep an eye on Ethiopia's Getnet Wale who finished fourth in the said event.

06:04 (IST)30 JUL 2021

05:54 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash Sable's personal best has been bettered by not one or two but 11 runners in his heats. Looks tough for him to qualify.

05:51 (IST)30 JUL 2021

A total of 44 steeplechasers have qualified for Tokyo Olympics and they are divided into two heats of 15 athletes each and one heat of 14 athletes. The top 3 steeplechasers from each of the heats qualify for the Olympics 2021 finals alongside the best six runners with the best timing.

05:47 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Avinash Sable is an Army person and has been posted at Siachen to Beed. Do read this interview with Sportskeeda.

The weather in Tokyo can take a toll on the long-distance runners, including the steeplechase runners. Here is what Avinash's coach Amrish Kumar told Sportskeeda a day before his match.

05:36 (IST)30 JUL 2021

Hello and welcome to Sportskeeda's live coverage of Avinash Sable's men's 3000m steeplechase match. He is in Heat 2 and that is scheduled to start from 06:17 AM IST.

Avinash Sable has a personal best of 8:20.20, which he set at Patiala earlier this year. That timing would have helped him finish 13th at the 2019 World Athletics Championships finals, exactly where he finished in Doha.
