Avinash Sable Olympics 2021 Men's 3000m Steeplechase Heats LIVE: Sable breaks National Record, fails to qualify for finals

Avinash Sable sets a National Record in men's 3000m Steeplechase at Olympics 2021, fails to progress to finals

India's Avinash Sable started the race on a slow note staying at the back far behind the pacemakers. However, he slowly and steadily made inroads. After the first 1000m, he found himself in the 6th position.

After 2000m, Avinash was positioned seventh and started to accelerate. He was even the pacemaker for a very short period of time. But, unfortunately, he got exhausted and dropped down places in the last two laps. In the end, he finished in the 7th position in his heat with a timing of 8:18.12 minutes.

However, that won't be enough for Avinash as he failed to progress to the finals. After the completion of two heats, there are six runners who have a better timing than him and have not taken the first three places. Kenya's Abhraham Kibiwot finished first in Avinash's heats with a timing of 8:12.25 minutes.

Avinash Sable fails to qualify for the finals! Canada's John Gay, who finished in the sixth position in Heat 1 has a timing of 8:16.99. That would mean, Avinash is seventh on the list with one more heat remaining.

Only the top six qualify. Feel bad for Avinash Sable who won't be participating in the Olympics 2021 final despite setting a Personal Best and National Record!

After the first 1000m, Avinash was in the sixth position and after another 1000m, he was in the seventh. He was momentarily the pacemaker as well, but dropped down in the final two laps and ended up in the seventh position.

Avinash Sable has broken his Personal Best record! His timing of 8:18.12 helps him finish in the seventh position.

Kenya's Abhraham Kibiwot finishes first and qualifies automatically to the finals.

And, Avinash Sable crosses the line. Seventh or eighth. We will have the official confirmation soon.

Avinash is nowhere near the top 6 pack.

There is the bell. Final lap coming.

There is the hurdle followed by water. Avinash puts both his foot on it before crossing.

Eritrea is leading and is followed by Kenya, Ethiopia, and USA.

Two laps to go and Avinash is in the seventh position.

Avinash is slowing down. Can't say whether it is exhaustion or saving the energy for the final lap.

Kenya is the pacemaker and Avinash is in the fifth position.

Avinash has dropped places. He is now fourth.

Avinash slows down and finishes the lap on a second place.

Avinash has progressed further and is now the pacemaker!

Well, Avinash seems to be in the seventh position in the second lap. No slips in this lap as well.

First lap completed. No runner has slipped in the waters.

The pacemaker is constantly changing. Earlier it was Ethiopia, then Kenya, and now Great Britain.

There is the hurdle and Avinash has slowly and steadily made progress. Four runners are behind him now.

Avinash has dropped to the second last position, but remember this is a 3000m steeplechase race. Not a sprint.

There is the gunshot! First three automatically qualifies.

Abraham Kibiwot has won a silver medal for Kenya at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Athletes have reached their mark.

And, the athletes are warming up. We can see Avinash Sable in light blue color.

The first heat is over and Ethiopia wins it. Quite a long distance between the top 3 and the rest of the pack.

None of the 2019 World Championships medallists are in Avinash Sable's heats. But do keep an eye on Ethiopia's Getnet Wale who finished fourth in the said event.

Avinash Sable's personal best has been bettered by not one or two but 11 runners in his heats. Looks tough for him to qualify.

A total of 44 steeplechasers have qualified for Tokyo Olympics and they are divided into two heats of 15 athletes each and one heat of 14 athletes. The top 3 steeplechasers from each of the heats qualify for the Olympics 2021 finals alongside the best six runners with the best timing.
