An extremely cagey game of football sees Chennaiyin FC return to the Marina Arena for a two-game homestand with three points from Kolkata.

The visitors dominated possession in the first half, but only really tested Kamaljit Singh once through Anirudh Thapa's shot. East Bengal inarguably had the better chances in the opening 45 minutes, with both VP Suhair and Cleiton Silva failing to take advantage of Chennaiyin's defensive lapses.

Thomas Brdaric's side displayed more urgency and flair in the second half and even had a penalty shout waved away, but struggled to really break a resolute East Bengal defense led by Ivan Gonzalez. They got their reward for an improved performance as Vafa Hakhamaneshi, who had a sighter earlier in the half, headed home from first-half substitute Aakash Sangwan's superbly weighted near-post delivery after holding off Charalambos Kyriacou.

There was more drama to come as Vafa was sent off just seconds after his goal for a second bookable offense after lifting his shirt to display a message on his vest. But the hosts hardly got five minutes with a man advantage as Sarthak Golui illegally impeded on Thapa and was also sent off for a second yellow card.

Chennaiyin then brought their game management to the fore, as they did after going down to 10 men against Bengaluru FC earlier in the season, to keep East Bengal out. It wasn't comfortable but the Marina Machans held on to move to fifth in the table with seven points from four matches. They will take on Mumbai City FC in their next game on November 12.

Stephen Constantine's men, meanwhile, remain 10th with just three points from five matches. Plenty to work on, particularly from defensive set-pieces and in the final third for the Red and Gold Brigade, who will travel down south to take on Bengaluru FC on November 11.

Chennaiyin FC hold on for their second win of the season, with both coming at the Salt Lake! Vafa Hakhamaneshi's 69th-minute header is the only goal of the game as the visitors take away all three points from a cagey encounter in which both teams played the final 15 minutes with 10 men.

75' EAST BENGAL ARE ALSO DOWN TO 10 MEN! Sarthak tussles with Thapa for the ball and his upright hand catches Thapa on the face. He receives his second caution after being booked earlier in the 5th minute and both teams have a man down for the final 15 minutes of regulation.

50' CHANCE! Thapa's corner is met by an East Bengal head but it comes to Rahim Ali in the box. He meets it with a well-struck volley, but the shot goes wide of the post.

49' CFC have started this second half better and they work it to Ajith, who whips a cross in for the onrushing Prasanth but Gonzalez gets in front of him to clear it out for a corner.

47' Rahim Ali finds himself in space on the left and whips a cross in, but it evades both Sliskovic and Thapa.

Chennaiyin dominated possession for much of the first half, but have just one shot on target from Anirudh Thapa after the half-hour mark to show for it. East Bengal have been happy to cede possession to the visitors while staying compact in midfield. They have threatened on the counter, but are yet to test Debjit after 45 minutes.

29' Ajith with a crucial clearance! East Bengal launch a counter attack with Jordan finding Suhair in space on the right. He whips a cross in towards Cleiton in space inside the box but Ajith gets back to clear it out for a throw-in.

24' Narayan Das pulled up with a hamstring injury while chasing Suhair down for the previous move and will not be able to continue. He's replaced by Aakash Sangwan for CFC.

21' CHANCE FOR EAST BENGAL! The best move of the game so far sees Cleiton find Suhair on the right, he runs past Narayan Das and gets the shot away but it dribbles wide of Debjit's far-post. Looks like the referee's flag went up though.

Quick Note: Sarthak Golui was booked for a challenge on Julius Duker in the fifth minute of the game.

11' CHENNAIYIN HIT THE WOODWORK! East Bengal give the ball away cheaply in their own half and allow Thapa to find Sliskovic inside the box. The striker latches on it, but can only hit the outside of Kamaljit's near-post from a narrow angle.

9' Half-chance for Chennaiyin! The visitors work the ball well out wide, Ajith finds Prasanth, who in turn gets it to Thapa in the box. The Marina Machans' skipper is unable to sort out his feet amid some contact from a East Bengal defender and the hosts clear it away!

6' Superb cross from Mahesh from a set-piece on the right but Debjit palms it away with Haokip lurking. The East Bengal forward was offside, however.
