Barcelona didn't have many clear-cut chances until Messi swung a ball into the box which Suarez got a touch on, Coates was unfortunate to get the final touch as the ball went over the line. Paulinho had a couple of chances to double his side's lead towards the fag end of the game, however, the Brazilian failed to convert those chances.

The home side had their chances but failed to make any of them count. It was a spirited performance from the Portuguese giants but they have nothing to show for it. Jorge Jesus' side will be looking forward to their next game, which is against Juventus in Turin and will be hoping to cause an upset, which they failed to do tonight.

Barcelona grab the vital three points after recording a narrow victory over the Portuguese giants. It was not the best of performances from Ernesto Valverde's side but they have got the win and that is all that matters.

90+2' Paulinho leads a Barcelona counter-attack and tries to release Vidal down the right, however, the ball is intercepted and Barcelona win a throw-in.

89' Substitution: Luis Suarez has been withdrawn and on comes Aleix Vidal in his place.

88' Substitution: Andre Gomes comes on to replace Sergi Roberto.

86' Paulinho has an excellent chance to double his side's lead but he ends up hitting straight at Patricio. Coates fumbled as he was getting the ball out of defence, he ended up passing the ball to Rakitic who played one through to Paulinho. It was a 3 on 1 situation and the Brazilian could have passed to one of his teammates or chipped it but he ended up hitting it straight at the shot-stopper.

83' Messi has the ball and he almost finds the run of Roberto, however, the Sporting defence are able to cut it out. The ball then falls to Paulinho, who attempts to find the net from all of 30-yards but his shot is well over the crossbar.

80' Substitution: Barcelona make their first change of the night as Paulinho replaces Iniesta.

79' Barcelona are able to clear the corner but Sporting come forward again, and this time Fernandes floats the ball towards Dost, who brings it down and Carvalho tries to hit it on the half-volley but he ends up snatching at it and it goes way over the target.

77' Sporting are trying to cause trouble to the Barcelona defence. A ball is played to Fernandes, who lets it fly from the edge of the box but the ball is deflected behind.

Barcelona are comfortable with their one-goal lead. The home side need just one chance to pull things back on level terms. Will they be able to do something here?

71' Ter Stegen keeps Barcelona's lead intact denying Bruno Fernandes from close range. The ball is played to Dost, who is in the middle of the box, the forward is too unselfish and passes it to the onrushing Fernandes who ends up hitting it straight at Ter Stegen.

69' Yellow Card: Semedo is the first Barcelona player to be booked tonight for a bad challenge.

68' Coates, who is desperate to make up for the own goal, tracks back and robs Busquets of the ball, the defender sprays it down the left and a cross is aimed towards Dost -- who is standing at the far post -- however, Ter Stegen is able to punch it right in front of the forward's head.

66' The ball is 25 yards from goal and Messi stands over it. The Argentine connects with his left foot and gets too much elevation as it goes over the ball but doesn't dip enough. The ball is cleared but only partially as Suarez has the opportunity to test Patricio from a left-footed shot from the edge of the box and the Portuguese gathers it comfortably.

65' Roberto is bundled over by Mathieu and Barcelona win a free-kick in a dangerous position. This is Messi territory.

Stat Attack: Barcelona have not lost to Portuguese opposition in over three decades.

61' Martins is overenthusiastic while challenging for the ball. Barcelona wins a free kick down the line.

59' Yellow Card: Coates is booked for a cynical foul on Suarez.

57' Messi is denied by an excellent recovering tackle from Mathieu. The Barca talisman was released down the right and it appeared he will double his side's lead but his former teammate denied him with an excellent tackle.

55' Bas Dost wins a corner for his side after forcing Pique to clear behind. The home side took the corner quickly and Dost goes down inside the box under challenge from Rakitic but the referee waves play on. The crowd jeer the decision heavily.

53' Yellow Card: Piccini is booked for holding Iniesta back.

The resulting free-kick is swung in by Messi and Coentrao helps it towards goal where Suarez is there to apply a touch, however, replays confirm that Coates got the final touch and hence own goal.

49' GOOOOOOOAAALLLLLL!!!!! Suarez gives Barcelona the lead!!

48' Acuna is guilty of fouling Semedo and Barca win a free-kick down the right.

It is Messi who gets us underway and Barca are playing from right to left.

The players are out on the pitch and we are moments away from the restart.

After a rather frustrating first-half, the two teams head back to the dressing room. Barcelona need to be more clinical if they are to get the result that everyone expects them to get. The home side, on the other hand, also need to step up their game and with some luck can cause a huge upset.

45+2' Rakitic tries to play one over the top to Messi down the left, however, his pass is overhit and it sails over Messi for a throw-in.

45' Semedo is guilty of handball and Sporting win a free-kick.

44' Substitution: Sporting's top scorer of last year Bas Dost comes on to replace Doumbia, who has been struggling ever since that challenge from Pique.

43' Messi is released inside the box courtesy of a good dummy by Suarez, the Argentine looks for options before going for goal with his right foot, he took an extra second and Sporting are able to block his shot.

42' Sporting are asking questions of the Barcelona defence and the away side seems to be under pressure. Martins, Doumbia and Piccini combine on the edge of the box before having attempts blocked by Barcelona defenders one after the other.

40' Yellow Card: Doumbia is booked for a dive.

39' Martins is released down the right hand side and the Portuguese finds Doumbia running down the middle, the Ivorian goes down theatrically under a challenge from Pique and the referee calls for a free-kick for Barcelona. The forward is then booked for diving.

37' Both the sides are unable to get their game going. Now, Iniesta is fouled by Martins and Barcelona win a free-kick. Messi swings the free-kick towards the back post and Pique and Umtiti go for the ball and are able to play it across goal towards Suarez, who attempts a bicycle kick but fails to connect.

34' Doumbia fouls Umtiti as the forward is too eager to win the ball right on the edge of the Barcelona box, the Sporting man accepts his mistake and the referee allows play to continue.

32' Mathieu and Fernandez stand over it, it is the latter who takes it but ends up hitting it straight at the wall.
