Netherlands left it late but a goalkeeping error from Mendy saw Gakpo pounce and Davy Klaassen added a late second as Senegal went in search of an equaliser. A game where Senegal strung together lots of passes but without the killer effect. Certainly missed the presence of Sadio Mane. Netherlands join Ecuador on 3 points at the top of Group A.

GOAL! Davy Klaassen in the 98th minute! Senegal 0 Netherlands 2. That's the game done now. Depay's shot is saved by Mendy but Klaassen is there to pounce on the rebound to slot it home. All 3 points surely now.

Lovely ball into the box but the header from a Senegalese striker loops well over. It's not happening for them tonight.

Andries Noppert stretches a long way on the dive and gets a strong left hand to push a Papa Gueye shot wide of the near-post. Good save.

Noppert saves well from Idrissa Gueye but it was straight at him and wouldn't have counted anyway as someone was offside.

Cheikhou Kouyate rises high and seems to have pulled something while doing so, he can't get up and is now off on a stretcher. A substitute comes on in his place. Kouyate is an integral part of this team and that's a big loss for Senegal.

Another substitution for Senegal as Boulaye Dia makes way for Marseille’s Bamba Dieng.

Now Senegal have a great chance as Ismaila Sarr cuts inside leaving the right-back flat-footed, it's going into the top right corner until van Dijk heads the ball away. It was on target and had the big Dutch goalkeeper beaten.

What a chance for Netherlands! Frenkie de Jong is one-on-one with the goalkeeper but he dilly-dallies and the defender gets back to hack it away. A glorious chance goes.

Gakpo crosses from the right and Blind at the far post jumps high but finds the sidenetting.

Gakpo and Dumfries get away on the right and the latter crosses it into the box but a Senegalese defender clears.

What a chance for Netherlands as Gakpo cuts it across the penalty box but there's no-one in the Dutch side who can meet that cross. Senegal get away with that one as they clear.

Early chance for Senegal but Cheikhou Kouyate's shot is deflected over.

The Al Thumama Stadium in Doha is the venue for this game and it has a capacity of 40,000. Also the only completely circular venue at this World Cup.

Jurrien Timber has been Louis van Gaal's go-to man at RCB, but the legendary Dutch manager has opted to hand Matthijs de Ligt a return to the starting XI for the clash against Senegal. De Ligt is undoubtedly a fine defender and has shown his class for club and country over the years, but can he re-establish himself at the heart of the backline alongside Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake?

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk is set to make his first appearance at a major tournament at the age of 31. The Dutchman is undoubtedly one of the finest defenders of his generation and will look to make a big impact on the grandest stage when he leads his side out in Qatar.

Senegal will have to make do without Sadio Mane, whose injury came as a crushing blow after they initially named him in the 26-man squad to travel to Qatar. However, the Netherlands have their own injury issues, with Memphis Depay currently out with a hamstring problem.

Netherlands were considering one of the favorites at the Euro 2020. But the Oranje endured a shock defeat to Czech Republic in the Round of 16. Undoubtedly, they are desperate to do well in Qatar.

Senegal were handed a huge blow before the start of the tournament when Sadio Mane was ruled out due to injury. That will be a massive blow for Aliou Cisse and company when it comes to their aspirations in Qatar.
