Early Life
Virgil van Dijk was born on July 8, 1991, in Breda, a city in the southern part of the Netherlands. Van Dijk started playing football at the local amateur club WDS'19, and later joined the youth academy of Willem II Tilburg, a professional football club in the Netherlands.
As a youngster, Van Dijk played in various positions on the field, including as a striker and midfielder. However, he eventually settled as a center-back, where he found his true calling. He showed great promise as a young player and was eventually scouted by FC Groningen, a professional football club in the Netherlands, where he started his professional career.
Club Career
He made his professional debut for FC Groningen in 2011 and quickly established himself as a key player in the team. Van Dijk played for two seasons at Groningen, making 66 appearances and scoring 7 goals.
In 2013, van Dijk signed for Scottish club Celtic, where he played for two and a half seasons. He quickly became a fan favorite and a key player for Celtic, helping the team win two Scottish Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup, and one Scottish League Cup. During his time at Celtic, van Dijk was named the Scottish Professional Football League Player of the Year in the 2014-15 season.
In 2015, van Dijk signed for English Premier League club Southampton, where he played for two seasons. He made 68 appearances for the club and was named the club's Player of the Year in the 2015-16 season.
In January 2018, van Dijk joined Liverpool in a record-breaking deal of £75 million. He quickly established himself as a key player for Liverpool and played a vital role in the team's success in the following seasons. International Career
He made his debut for the Netherlands in a friendly match against Kazakhstan on October 10, 2015. Van Dijk has since become a key player for the Netherlands, playing a vital role in their defense. He helped the team reach the final of the UEFA Nations League in 2019, where they were defeated by Portugal. Van Dijk was named the Player of the Match in the semi-final against England.
He was also a member of the Netherlands squad that reached the Euro 2020 round of 16, where they were eliminated by the Czech Republic. However, he was unable to play in the tournament due to an injury he sustained earlier in the season.
He currently captains the squad and has made 54 appearances for his nation, scoring six goals.
