Unfortunately, Sonia Lather will have to settle for silver this time round. However, she has put out some good performances in this tournament, and can hold her head, as she comes back home with a silver medal.
Hello, and welcome to our coverage of the Women's Asian Boxing Championship 57 kg category final! The two boxers are in the ring and we are raring to go!
Indian boxer Sonia Lather has carried forward her good performance, as she made her way to the summit clash of the 2017 Women’s Asian Boxing Championship, in Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam, on Wednesday.
The 25 year old Sonia, who fights in the 57 kg category, will be facing Junhua Jin in the final, as she looks to notch up another prestigious medal.
The Indian boxer had already impressed last year at the World Boxing Championship, where she made it all the way to the final of the championship. However, she lost out in the summit clash against the higher ranked Alessia Mesiano of Italy.
Sonia has been on terrific form in this tournament, as she beat Mirzaeva Yodgoroy of Uzbekistan in the semifinal, on Tuesday. The Indian boxer was completely dominant in the semi final clash, and clinched it via a 5-0 unanimous decision, much like her compatriot and veteran boxer MC Mary Kom did, in her 48 kg category against Tsubasa Komura of Japan.
Due to the victories of these two boxers, we will be able to see two Indians in the final of the Women’s Asian Boxing Championship, and since they are competing in two different categories, we might just see both of them clinch the coveted gold medals.
However, their compatriot and veteran boxer Sarita Devi was not as fortunate in her 64 kg semi final, where she lost to Dou Dou of China. Meanwhile Shiksh also suffered a defeat in the 54kg category, while Seema Poonia went down in the 81kg+ category.
