5 better opponents for Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33

Brock needs some better opponents in 2017.

We have our first official match for WrestleMania 33. Brock Lesnar will be having a second match against Goldberg on the WrestleMania stage. Lesnar has already faced Goldberg repeatedly in the last few months and has never had a good match with him in their history of terrible matches.

It now looks likely that Goldberg will be the Universal Champion after Fastlane as well and we will have an unnecessary rematch between the two part-timers for Raw’s biggest prize.

I think the WWE can do better. Brock only gets a few matches a year so why waste a lot of them against a 50-year old part-timer who is likely leaving after the show anyway? If Brock wins the Universal Title at Mania, it would lock up the title on a wrestler who wouldn’t be there to defend it on a constant basis.

Why not use Brock Lesnar’s star power for something far more interesting to benefit the roster?

I present my list of the top five better opponents for Brock Lesnar to face at WrestleMania 33:

#5 Sami Zayn

The Ultimate Underdog vs The Beast?

Sami really has that underdog thing down well, doesn’t he? Sami is possibly the most over babyface on the WWE roster and has shown that perfectly against Braun Strowman and Samoa Joe in recent months.

He has the uncanny ability to take a beating from bigger wrestlers and continue to come back for more in a credible way. Heck, the crowd went crazy for him when he simply survived ten minutes with Braun.

You know who loves to give out a good beating? That is Brock Lesnar’s favourite thing to do! Sami would garner a lot of sympathy from the crowd as he tries to get a match against one of the biggest stars in the company.

It would allow Brock and Paul to mock the favourite underdog of the Raw brand in the coming weeks. It is simple and effective storytelling that would give Sami a well deserved moment on the WrestleMania stage.

#4 Seth Rollins

Some unfinished business with Brock?

This is more about unfinished business. Brock and Seth faced each other at Battleground in 2015 but the match ended abruptly when Undertaker showed up to set up his future matches against Brock Lesnar.

Seth Rollins was a part of arguably Brock’s best match since his return at Royal Rumble 2015, the triple threat match that also included John Cena. When Brock is forced to work fast, he does his best work.

I certainly understand that Triple H has a clear match with Rollins at WrestleMania 33, but it would seem like that build could continue for a future pay-per-view. Why not give Seth multiple obstacles on the road to the Game?

Brock would get a quality opponent who would push him to a great match and it would also provide some well-deserved closure for their feud.

#3 Braun Strowman

Braun deserves a big match on the biggest stage

Whatever you think of him as a wrestler, Braun has been booked perfectly on the Raw brand the last six months.

He has destroyed dozens of jobbers, had sudden violent attacks on the roster and has never been made to look weak. He has even had a main event match with Big Show and it was really good. The fans are really getting behind him as well.

It would be a shame if after all that buildup he loses to Roman Reigns at Fastlane and is simply wasted on the WrestleMania 33 card in some Battle Royal.

Since Braun has shown his quality against bigger wrestlers, he certainly could put on a good match with Brock. It would give the younger wrestler the rub he needs and also give Brock a fresh match-up for Orlando.

#2 Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe deserves a big match on the WrestleMania stage

Samoa Joe has been presented perfectly on Monday Night Raw so far.

He has the assassin role down perfectly and his attacks on Seth Rollins along with Sami Zayn have looked violent and shocking. If you want someone who could physically stand up to Brock, Samoa Joe would fit the bill.

Joe matches certainly have been quite physical during his NXT years and that is the style Brock seems to truly enjoy. It would look like a fight.

Regardless of whoever won the encounter, it would establish both characters going forward. Joe needs to have a big showcase in Orlando for his long-term future.

#1 AJ Styles

I’ll take a match with Brock over Shane any day

Why not have a cross-brand match? This would be the best choice on the biggest stage possible.

AJ Styles had arguably the best year in 2016. He had several legitimate match of the year candidates with the likes of Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and John Cena. It seemed like a big deal when he fought at any show as he would put on the highest quality at every event. So why not try it with Brock?

Brock has looked his best with the “smaller wrestlers” upon his return. His matches with CM Punk and Seth Rollins were among his best as he had to expand his offence to keep up with them. The matches weren’t simply a series of suplexes.

AJ could work any style and it might reinvigorate a stale Brock character. I mean who would you rather see AJ face: Shane McMahon or one of the biggest stars in the world in Lesnar? The choice seems clear.
