What's the story?

CM Punk's MMA career may have taken a backseat after his loss to Mike Jackson at UFC 225 but the former WWE Superstar's legal battles continue to be a regular feature in his life.

There's now a new development in CM Punk-Colt Cabana saga as the former WWE Champion has filed a motion with the aim of dismissing Cabana's renewed lawsuit.

Before we get into the details, let's shed some light on the backstory...

In case you didn't know...

The reason behind CM Punk's departure from the WWE in 2014 was always and still is, a matter of intense debate. After months of speculation, Punk had appeared on Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling podcast in November 2014 and gave a detailed account of his WWE exit.

During the podcast, Punk revealed his poor health as the reason behind the sudden retirement and blamed WWE doctors for medical maltreatment. WWE doctor Chris Amann took offense to Punk's claim and filed a defamation lawsuit against both Punka and Cabana, seeking almost $40 Million in damages. A trial ensued and in the end, the jury ruled in favor of Punk and Cabana in 2018.

Just when everything seemed to have settled down, a new controversy engulfed as Cabana accused Punk of breach of trust and filed a lawsuit as he claimed Punk refused to cover the legal fees that were incurred during the Amann legal proceedings.

The heart of the matter

Cabana's first lawsuit was filed in August 2018 and mentioned that Punk had promised to cover all the legal expenses that would be incurred as a result of the Amann fiasco. However, Punk would later own stake his claim on half of Cabana's fees. Cabana was forced to shell out $200,000 from his own pocket to cover the fees Punk allegedly refused to pay.

Cabana's lawsuit was dismissed in December on the grounds that it was insufficient to indict Punk on charges of fraud, but, he was told he could file an amended lawsuit.

Now, Punk has filed a motion to dismiss the amended lawsuit. PWInsider has revealed that the former WWE Champion's lawyers want Cabana's lawsuit to be squashed as its allegations are conclusory in nature and not factual. Punk's legal team feel that the amended lawsuit will fail to hold up legally in the state of Illinois as it's based on unverified statements.

What's next?

It's sad to see two former best friends engaging in a bitter legal fight. Nonetheless, Cabana and Punk currently find similar commentating roles but their domains are complete opposites,

While Cabana is a color commentator for Ring of Honor, Punk has assumed MMA commentary duties for Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CCFC) -- which is affiliated to the UFC.
