Major blow to CM Punk's UFC debut, reason behind delay

Lingering injuries have come back to haunt Punk

Last week, UFC announced Mickey Gall (2-0) as CM Punk’s first UFC opponent that further aroused the interest of MMA fanatics and Punk fans direly waiting to witness his Octagon debut.

Now, the wait is set to increase as Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com reveals that Punk is scheduled to undergo a back surgery for a herniated disc in Chicago, further delaying the much-anticipated fight.

Punk’s ordeal with his problematic back dates back to his pro wrestling days and as of late, the injury got worse and required urgent attention. Punk divulged that he learnt about the status of his back from a doctor on Saturday – a day before he finally knew his first opponent.

Brooks, while staying positive about the future, said, ““My back has always bugged me. Figured it was just wrestling sh*t. Turns out it was. It got bad enough to the point where I couldn’t do anything the week before I went to train with the New Jersey Devils last month. One day I could manage, the next day I couldn’t. I’ve been in agony for almost a month. Chiropractor, acupuncture, massage, cryotherapy … nothing worked.”

He added, “This is just a bump in the road. I’m positive about this.”
