What's the story?

Former UFC Heavyweight Fighter Fabricio Werdum might be the idol of millions when he steps into an Octagon, but he is a real-life hero as well. Leaving aside the fact that it was not his responsibility, and no one would have said a word if he had watched on, he did not waste a moment when he learnt that two teenagers were in a dire situation at the sea beach where he was present.

He sprung into action and made sure that he did his part in rescuing the teens, who might otherwise have drowned.

In case you didn't know...

For those of you who are not aware, Fabricio Werdum is a former Heavyweight Champion in the UFC Fight promotion. He is one of the best heavyweights to ever have competed in the UFC Heavyweight Division, beating the likes of Mark Hunt and Cain Velasquez, as well as the likes of Fedor Emelianenko outside the UFC.

He has not fought in the UFC since March of 2018 and recently announced that although he has two more fights left in his contract to the UFC, he has asked for his release from the company.

The heart of the matter

Fabricio Werdum was present at the Southern California Beach with his wife, and there he saw the fireman's car stop in front of him. He realised what was happening, and out in the water saw two heads of two teens struggling in the water. Seeing that there was only one lifeguard, he sprung into action.

He grabbed an orange floater and while the lifeguard rescued the girl, he took hold of the boy and swam back to shore. There were huge waves, and it was a struggle as they were more than 70 metres out, but they managed to get back safely.

"When I looked, there were two tiny heads at sea yelling ‘help.’ They were very far, about 70 meters away. When the lifeguard grabbed the board by himself, I took off my coat and ran. I took the orange floater, threw it across my chest, and I arrived with him, a little further ahead even. I told him to get the girl, who was screaming a lot, and I got the boy, who was already limp. I was able to get him, and we swam toward the beach. Then, at shore, an old man helped me. The waves were big. The girl sank about three times.” - MMA Junkie

His wife got a video of him walking back on shore with the boy.

What's next?

Due to being suspended from the UFC for a period of two years, Werdum is waiting to be released. He might not be considering a career as a lifeguard, however, as he confessed the situation had been extremely intense.

“Wow, my heart was beating a million. It’s an extreme situation. The heart goes to a million. It’s worse than a fight. It’s not even close.”
