BJJ legend Gordon Ryan is facing a significant setback in his competitive career after being hospitalized with an untreatable throat infection following his trip to Abu Dhabi.

The 27-year-old grappling sensation has been struggling with severe throat issues, requiring multiple rounds of antibiotics over the course of 40 days without much relief from doctors.

Gordon Ryan took to Instagram to provide an update on his condition, stating that he is uncertain about his return to competition. He revealed that he contracted a severe case of strep throat upon returning from Abu Dhabi, which eventually led to his throat swelling shut and landing him in the hospital. Doctors were unable to cure the infection as it was unresponsive to penicillin, the typical treatment for strep throat.

"Hi everyone- quick update for everyone who has been asking. I'm not sure when I'll be competing again. When I got back from my Abu Dhabi trip I came down with a severe case of strep throat which ended with me in the hospital because my throat swelled shut. Doctors also couldn't figure out how to cure it since no one ever fails penicillin for a strep infection. In all, I did 7 days of amoxicillin and within a day my throat was back to square one. Then, I did 10 days of penicillin and within 2 days off I was in the hospital with my throat swollen shut. In the hospital, they gave me a shot of penicillin and another 10 days of penicillin, which i failed. Then I switched to 14 days of clindamycin, which worked. So all in I was on over 40 days of antibiotics straight plus a shot of penicillin."
"So I've been completely inactive for a longer time than I ever have since I started training. As expected, my stomach has relapsed pretty bad and my nausea and lack of appetite have re-appeared, so I'll need to deal with that, but first I'm headed into surgery today for a tonsillectomy and to fix my severely deviated septum. Just wanted to update everyone on what my competition schedule looks like. I'm hoping to be back in the next few months ❤️"

'King' underwent a tonsillectomy and surgery to correct a severely deviated septum. He expressed his hope of returning to competition within the next few months but acknowledged the need to address his stomach issues and regain his strength before making a comeback.

Gordon Ryan's highly anticipated comeback: Grappling world awaits the return of the 'King'

Gordon Ryan has not competed since his victory over Nicky Rodriguez at Fight Pass Invitational 3 in the previous year. His anticipated matchup against Felipe Pena at Tezos WNO earlier this year was derailed due to recurring stomach problems.

Given the American submission grappler's intense health issues, fans can expect him to return to the grappling scene no earlier than 2024.
