Aspinall captured the interim heavyweight title with a first-round KO of Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295. He is undefeated in the UFC and became the first fighter to defend an interim belt in over a decade when he defeated Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. No interim champion had achieved the feat since Renan Barao's UFC 165 win over Eddie Wineland in September 2013.

However, Jones, the reigning champion, had refused to fight the Brit, citing his relatively short list of accomplishments and lack of star power. While posting the video on his Instagram story, Aspinall implied that UFC CEO Dana White would not appreciate him making a vital fight announcement on Instagram. The caption read:

"Lastly, if I did fight announcements, I'd be in a lot of trouble with the bossman. Glad I got your attention, though, and be nice to see you for an Aspinall fest."
