Jonathan Haggerty has got a fight set up, and it's for his ONE bantamweight kickboxing world title.
Famed trainer Christian Knowles revealed on Instagram that Haggerty recently signed his next contract and would defend the bantamweight kickboxing throne the next time he steps between the ropes.
Knowles posted:
"🚨 Big News! 🚨 Next big fight CONFIRMED for Jonathan Haggerty on the global stage with ONE Championship defending his kickboxing world title! 🥊🔥 We couldn’t be prouder of Jon as he continues to showcase his incredible talent at the highest level of Muay Thai and kickboxing. This is going to be a fight to remember!"
Haggerty had his champ-champ status revoked when he relinquished the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title to Superlek Kiatmoo9, who also holds the ONE flyweight kickboxing world title, in the main event of ONE 168: Denver in September.
Nevertheless, Haggerty remains at the top of the bantamweight kickboxing division and is ready to start his redemption arc.
Haggerty, a former ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion, first captured the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title when he scored a stunning knockout upset over Thai legend Nong-O Hama at ONE Fight Night 9.
He then reached double-champ status when he stopped ONE bantamweight MMA world champion Fabricio Andrade for the vacant ONE bantamweight kickboxing world title at ONE Fight Night 16.
The British star had one successful defense of the bantamweight Muay Thai strap when he came back from an early knockdown and knocked out Felipe Lobo at ONE Fight Night 19.
It's unclear when Haggerty's next match is or who he'll defend his bantamweight kickboxing throne against, but 'The General' seems to have started preparing for his eighth world title match in ONE Championship.
Jonathan Haggerty explains why he and Liam Harrison never fought in ONE Championship
It was the feud that gripped the British martial arts landscape, but Jonathan Haggerty and Liam Harrison never had the chance to face each other inside the cage.
In an interview with the Winners Talking Podcast, Haggerty explained that things never fell into place for a supposed super fight against his British compatriot:
"We never really crossed paths, you know, because he was always a heavier weight. In the UK, I was fighting at 57-59 kilos, he was fighting at 65. And in ONE Championship, he was having his fights. I was at 61 and he was at 65 [kilos]. But he's sorta at the back end of his career. And I don't think he wanted to take that chance. I was a young and up-and-coming fighter, doesn't make sense."
