Brazilian grappling ace Mayssa Bastos punctuated her impressive run so far in ONE Championship by becoming a world champion in just her second match in the promotion. She defeated erstwhile atomweight submission grappling queen Danielle Kelly when they clashed for the latter's title in August.
The 27-year-old Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy standout had herself a battle against Kelly at ONE Fight Night 24 on Aug. 2 at the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. The tide swung back-and-forth between the two until Bastos picked up the pace late in the 10-minute joust with a deep leg trap. From that position, she secured a belly-down hook.
When the smoke cleared, it was Mayssa Bastos' hand that was raised in triumph, making her the new divisional queen. ONE Championship recently uploaded the full fight between the two on its official YouTube channel ahead of their scheduled rematch next week.

Apart from becoming the new atomweight submission grappling world champion, the win also earned Mayssa Bastos a $50,000 performance bonus from ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodting. It took her overall career record to 119-12.
Mayssa Bastos seeks to make it back-to-back victories over Danielle Kelly
Four months removed from their first encounter, Mayssa Bastos and Danielle Kelly will tangle in a title rematch at ONE Fight Night 26: Lee vs. Rasulov on Dec. 6 in Thailand, where the former looks to make it back-to-back wins over her rival.
Bastos-Kelly II is one of two world title fights on offer on the card happening at the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok and airing live and for free at U.S. primetime to North American fans with an active Amazon Prime Video subscription.
Speaking to ONE Championship in an interview, Bastos said:
"Looking forward to my first title defense."
With her decision victory over former champion Kelly, Bastos became a world champion and handed Kelly her first loss under the ONE Championship banner.
