Gordon Ryan describes attending The Joe Rogan Experience despite severe nausea

UFC commentator Joe Rogan is known for having a wide variety of guests on his widely popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. Gordon Ryan, arguably the best grappler on the planet, detailed how a stomach infection affected him in his appearance on JRE.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Ryan opened up about how his stomach infection forced his temporary retirement, before adding:

"I couldn't even hold a conversation. Like I went on Joe Rogan for the first time, The Joe Rogan Experience, and I'd just met Joe at the time. I was like, man, I can't tell Joe Rogan that I can't do this podcast right now because I'm so nauseous that I can't talk, but the whole time, I'm just like, 'Hold it together, hold it together, hold it together.'"

Ryan continued:

"I had no recollection of what we even talked about because I was so nauseous the whole time. I was just like, 'Come on, just get through it, man.' Eventually, not only could I not train the right way or compete the right way, I couldn't even hold a conversation and I couldn't even talk. I just couldn't live life at all."

Despite signing a contract with ONE Championship, Ryan was forced to retire in May 2021 before debuting with the promotion. He returned to competitive submission grappling earlier this year and has picked up where he left off, winning all nine of his fights.

Joe Rogan honored to watch Gordon Ryan make history at ADCC

Following a one-year hiatus from competitive grappling, Gordon Ryan made his return to the sport in 2022.

Rogan was on hand at the Thomas Mack Center in Las Vegas to witness Ryan make history as he became the first fighter in the history of the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, or ADCC, to win a title in three different weight classes.

Ryan picked up a submission victory over IBJJF and ADCC Hall of Famer Andre Galvao. Following the fight, the UFC commentator took to Instagram to share that he was honored to watch the event live:

"Congrats to the King, @gordonlovesjiujitsu! He made it look easy. Just like he said it would be. Incredible. It was an honor to be there in person to watch."

While many have speculated if Ryan will potentially transition to mixed martial arts, he has shared that he is unlikely to make the move. He did, however, note one condition that could influence him to do so.
