Anthony Johnson had 18 fights in the UFC in his 23-6 MMA career. 'Rumble' had a 13-8 UFC record, with notable wins over the likes of Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Texeira, Ryan Bader and Antônio Rogério Nogueira. The legendary knockout artist had 17 career wins by knockout and six decision victories.

On November 13, 2022, Anthony Johnson passed away after a long battle with illness. 'Rumble' was signed with Bellator at the time of his death. In October 2021, he was supposed to make his second appearance with the organization but pulled out citing illness, which he largely kept private.

Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson was 38 years old at the time of his passing.

Following the news of his demise, the MMA community took to social media to post their tributes and condolences.

Ariel Helwani wrote:

"One of the hardest hitters and most talented fighters in MMA history. Gone way too soon. May he rest in peace."

Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier posted a picture from when he faced off with 'Rumble' at UFC 187, saying:

"Rest easy my brother. For a guy who struck fear in so many peoples heart Anthony Johnson was a caring person. From random text to check ins during loss. What a person he was, Rumble will be missed. Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair. Horrible news."

No.1 light heavyweight contender Glover Texeira posted the following:

"I am so sad to hear about this news. One of the most scary & tough opponents that I had ever faced and one of the nicest and most humble humans I have ever met. My heart is broken. My condolences to his family. RIP."

No. 12-ranked welterweight Michael Chiesa first posted the message: "I hope what I'm hearing is not true" with a heartbroken emoji, before replying to the same post with:

"RIP Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson. One of the most prolific KO artists our sport has ever seen. My prayers go out to his family and everyone affected by this tragedy."

Anthony Johnson's two-weight class UFC run

Anthony Johnson had two runs at separate weight classes in the UFC. 'Rumble' was a welterweight on his first UFC run between 2007 and 2012. However, Johnson had trouble making the limit, with two of those fights being rescheduled as catchweight bouts as a result.

At UFC 142, in his last fight on his first UFC run against Vitor Belfort at middleweight, he missed weight again, which resulted in the bout being converted into a catchweight contest. He lost the fight via submission and was let go by the organization on a disciplinary measure for missing weight repeatedly.

Anthony Johnson had a resurgence at 205lbs and rejoined the UFC in 2014. Johnson had a legendary run at light heavyweight and fought for the title twice against Daniel Cormier. He lost twice against the former champ-champ and retired after falling short in their rematch

He was successful upon his return to the sport last year, but ultimately didn't have the opportunity to return to the top before his untimely passing..
