Former ONE atomweight submission grappling world champion Danielle Kelly has had plenty of time to assess her defeat to Mayssa Bastos. She concluded that she gave too much respect to the Brazilian ground game wizard.
The 28-year-old put her gold on the line in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 24 this past August. Both superstars lived up to the hype and delivered a nail-biting 10-minute scrap that featured plenty of tricks and moves from the Brazilian jiu-jitsu dictionary.
While Kelly did her best to impress, Bastos had the American's number in one too many junctures of the clash. Eventually, the Philadelphia native took the unanimous decision loss, thus walking out of the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, without her ONE world title.
Reflecting on what might have possibly gone wrong in the mental aspect of things, Danielle Kelly had this to say to ONE Championship:
"I felt like I was putting a lot of pressure on myself when I shouldn't. I was kinda giving her too much credit, which she deserves."
Danielle Kelly ready for rematch with Bastos, aims to bag the W and soar to new heights
The submission grappling superstar vows not to make the same mistake twice, though. The Silver Fox BJJ affiliate has put an insane amount of time into upgrading her craft in the hope of fixing any recurring flaws during her time away.
She hopes that will help her exact revenge, pull one back, and reclaim her throne when she meets Bastos again in a rematch at ONE Fight Night 26 next Friday, December 6.
More importantly, Danielle Kelly hopes to further solidify her status as one of the best modern-day submission grappling specialists today.
In the same exchange, she added:
"I feel like I am legit now, but I feel like just beating her, putting her name on my record of beating her, will just put me way higher."
ONE Fight Night 26 will be available to active Amazon Prime Video subscribers in North America.
