Ryan Garcia will face WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney in the headlining bout on April 20. However, he will not become the champion with a win.

Garcia was set to challenge Haney for the 140-pound title. However, he weighed 143.2 pounds on the weigh-ins, 3.2 pounds above the divisional limit. Haney dismissed the idea of calling off the fight despite his opponent's weight miss.

Both sides reached a financial agreement and the fight will proceed as agreed. According to an ABC News report, Garcia will forfeit approximately $600,000 of his fight purse to Haney.

As a result of the weight miss, Haney will retain the title if he wins but the title will be left vacant if Garcia defeats him. Furthermore, Garcia will not have to weigh within a certain limit on fight night, a condition enforced in many cases to nullify any size advantage an overweight fighter may enjoy.

While speaking at the pre-fight press conference on Thursday, Haney predicted that Garcia would miss weight for the fight. Both men agreed to pay $500,000 per pound if they missed weight and shook hands to make the bet official.

Garcia will attempt to score his second straight win after suffering a knockout loss against Gervonta 'Tank' Davis in April 2023. He defeated Oscar Duarte via knockout to get back in the win column last December.

Meanwhile, the bout will mark Haney's second competitive appearance in the 140-pound division. After defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko via a controversial unanimous decision to defend the lightweight title, Haney decided to move up in weight.

In December 2023, 'The Dream' defeated Regis Prograis to win the super lightweight title. The fight against Garcia is one of the most highly touted matchups of the current era of boxing.
