Middleweight contender Joe Pyfer expressed his disagreement about the UFC's fighter pay model. Pyfer, who defeated Kelvin Gastelum by unanimous decision at the recent UFC 316 pay-per-view event, made the statement during his recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.
Many UFC fighters receive 50 percent of their fight pay as show money, and the remaining 50 percent is earned as the win bonus. While discussing the issue of fighter pay disparity in boxing and MMA with Ariel Helwani, Pyfer said:
"I think the UFC does have some bad dudes. We should be paid like the boxers because we put it on the line. One thing I'm not a fan of is the 50/50 purse. That's my only thing. I want guaranteed money."

"I think I've proven that I'm gonna bring it and I'm gonna look for the finish. I'm just not a decision guy. Could I have kept Kelvin on the ground? Yeah. I know I could have, but I wanted to finish... I would prefer to have guaranteed money cause I think the anxiety for me is just like, man, I'm fighting one of the best guys in the world. Anything can happen. But if I don't win, I only make this much."

Joe Pyfer shares his thoughts on the scoring of his UFC 316 fight
While Joe Pyfer started strong with two knockdowns in Round 1, Kelvin Gastelum managed to rally later and made the fight a lot more competitive. Judge Sal D'Amato scored all three rounds in Pyfer's favor, while judges Eric Colon and Chris Lee gave Round 3 to Gastelum.
Speaking about the scoring in the aforementioned appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Pyfer said:
"I'd consider a case for that, for the third round only, just because he had a big one-two that he hit me with, which were his most significant strikes of the fight. But ultimately, he landed six shots on me... I would say I won the first two for sure, and maybe I could say the third round was 50-50. In my opinion, I won it. But, I know I got hit with a good one-two..."
