Shakur Stevenson recently suffered a hand injury in training which required immediate surgery. The WBC lightweight champion was forced out of his title clash with Joe Cordina, which was scheduled to take place on Oct. 12, and it's unclear if the fight will be re-booked or not.
The Newark native suffered a torn ligament in his right hand during a recent sparring session. Footage of the incident was recently uploaded to X by journalist Mike Coppinger. The clip showed the 22-0 fighter throwing a right hook to the body before collapsing to the ground in pain.
Coppinger shared the clip and wrote:
"The moment Shakur Stevenson injured his right hand in sparring, the result of a body shot."

Eddie Hearn confirms that Joe Cordina will likely not fight Shakur Stevenson next
Shakur Stevenson and Joe Cordina were scheduled to face off for the WBC lightweight title as part of an incredible undercard for Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol on Oct. 12.
Unfortunately, the 27-year old suffered a torn ligament in his hand, forcing him to withdraw from the bout. With William Zepeda currently the WBC mandatory opponent for Stevenson, it appears that his scheduled clash with Cordina will be scrapped.
Promoter for both Cordina and the WBC champion, Eddie Hearn, was recently interviewed following news of the American's injury. He said:
"Done his tendon in his hand, the knuckle. He had to have an immediate operation, it went very well. Won't be out for too long, he'll be back early-2025. Gutted for him, and gutted for Joe as well... Yeah most likely [the Cordina fight won't happen], because [Stevenson] has got to fight Zepeda. But we'll look for other opportunities for Joe."
