Jackie Buntan never expected combat sports to become her career. In November, Buntan claimed her first 26 pounds of ONE Championship gold, besting seven-time titleholder Anissa Meksen at ONE 169 in Bangkok to claim the ONE strawweight kickboxing world championship. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostIt was a big moment for the 27-year-old star — especially considering when he first began her journey as a teenager, it was all meant to be nothing more than a hobby.Buntan said on The Casuals podcast:"13 years old. I had no intention of competing. You know, it was strictly just for a hobby. And one of the coaches at boxing works asked me if I wanted to compete, like, around 13 years old. And I was like, I never thought about that. Maybe it was like a tournament in Iowa."She added:"It's a big tournament still going on, like TBA, Thai Boxing Association tournament. I know it's random. It's in Iowa out of all places, but it's huge. So yeah, went out to Iowa, competed, had like, two fights in a weekend, and won the tournament."Jackie Buntan's family did not support her fighting career at firstAfter realizing that she wanted to make the fight game her life's work, Buntan knew she would have to break the news to her family. As it turns out, that was no easy task."They knew that they gave me a hard time for good reason," Buntan added. "But yeah, it took like, maybe a year for them to actually realize, like, okay, she's actually kind of good at this. Maybe if we just let her do it and see where it her."Clearly, Buntan made the right choice. The only question that remains is, what's next for the Boxing Works star?If you missed any of the action, ONE Championship fans in the United States and Canada can watch the ONE 169: Malykhin vs. Reug Reug replay on demand via Amazon Prime Video.
