During episode 1109 of The Joe Rogan Experience, English scientist and neuroscience professor Matthew Walker told Joe Rogan a rather fun fact that many aquatic mammals have the ability to sleep with half their brains still awake.

Living true to his comic roots, the quick-witted UFC commentator responded that this was exactly how the employees at the Motor Vehicles Department worked:

"That's how people at the DMV do it. Those people that work at the department of motor vehicles. They work half asleep. Just teasing you, if you are DMV and going f**k you man, the next time you come in to get your license renewed... TSA workers, same thing. Them too, I'm just kidding f****rs relax."

During the podcast, Walker explained that there are two types of sleep called non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and REM sleep. The scientist added that it is the non-REM sleep that helps in body replenishment.

Walker, however, shared that when somebody is in a foreign environment, the brain resists non-REM sleep:

"There are two principle types [of sleep]. One is non-rapid eye movement sleep... the other is REM sleep. The non-REM sleep is further divided into four separate stages... But it's the deep stages of... non-rapid eye moment, that's where a lot of sort of replenishment takes place, great for the cardiovascular system... But that's the deep sleep that one-half of your brain will resist going into when you are sleeping in a foreign environment."

When Andrew Huberman told Joe Rogan that ample sun exposure was the secret to a great sleep

During episode 1842 of JRE, American neuroscientist Andrew Huberman explained to Joe Rogan that maximizing sun exposure in the first half of the day was the most important thing to do to achieve good sleep.

Huberman also suggested that people should limit artificial light exposure from 10 PM to 4 AM every day:

"Always maximize exposure o sunlight in the first half of the day, number one thing to making sure that you sleep well that night. And then limiting artificial light exposure by dimming lights from 10 PM to 4 AM."

The scientists further shared that skin acts as an endocrine organ and sun exposure helps it in replenishing testosterone and estrogen levels in the body:

"And there is this really nice study from Israel this last year that show that if you had people, this is men and women, go outside for twenty minutes, three times a week and try and expose as much of their skin as they possibly could to sunlight... that it raised testosterone and estrogen significantly. Because why?... It [skin] is an organ that actually functions as an endocrine."
