Boxing fans were not impressed with Shakur Stevenson's performance on July 6. The 27-year-old locked horns against Artem Harutyunyan with the WBC lightweight championship at stake.
The fight took place at the Prudential Center in Stevenson's hometown of Newark, New Jersey. Despite having the fight in his hometown, the WBC champion received criticism from the crowd present in the arena.
The fight turned out to be a lackluster affair and as a result, the audience started booing Stevenson and many in attendance proceeded to leave the venue before the end of the main event.
Boxing fans from around the world chimed in on the fight by sharing their thoughts on social media.
One individual criticised the New Jersey native and said the 27-year-old should be 'ashamed' of his performance.
"This is beyond embarrassing, bro. He should be ashamed."
One fan provided an insight to the incident, claiming that people started walking out of the arena during the 11th round of the event. The fan added that at that point in the fight, Stevenson's victory seemed like a foregone conclusion.
"This was during the 11th round... The fight was already over & it was easy to see Harutyunyan was trying to survive the last couple of rounds."
One person went on to share that the incident reminded them of former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
"Reminds me of [Aljamain Sterling]."
One user came to the New Jersey native's defense and called his performance 'flawless'.
"Never seen so many complaints about a flawless performance. If you just like knockouts, don't go to boxing events."
