Andrew Tate's brash nature may prompt people to wonder who raised both 'Cobra' and his brother Tristan to become such controversial figures.

Tate's father, Emory Tate Jr., was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 27, 1958. Emory was "academically talented," according to an article published by BuzzFeedNews.com. He was awarded a full scholarship to Northwestern University but dropped out of college due to his social life.

Andrew Tate's father was a talented chess player, winning the Indiana State Championship six times and being inducted into the Indiana State Chess Hall of Fame. Emory served in the U.S. Army from 1980 to 1992 and won the United States Armed Forces Chess Championship five times. He received the title of International Master, the third highest ranking in chess.

Current chess grandmaster, Hikaru Nakamura, reacted to a statement made by Tristan Tate about how little money professional chess players make by recalling a story about Nakamura's step-father playing chess with Emory Tate Jr.:

"They aren't wrong tho... There was a time like 25-30 years ago where they were playing each other... for like $2 or $3 every game. I mean it was competitive and they were having a good time, and afterwards they'd go to Denny's 'cause that's all they could afford. That's a story about my step father playing against Emory Tate [Jr.]."

Emory was stationed in the UK during his army service, where he met Eileen Ashleigh. The couple married in 1985, and Eileen gave birth to 'Cobra' and his brother in 1986 and 1988 respectively.

Andrew Tate stated that his mother was "subservient" to his father and that he learned lessons from his parents' dynamic at home in an interview with Patrick Bet-David. In the same interaction, 'Cobra' also shared that his father was diagnosed with a narcisstic personality disorder.

Emory was discharged from the army in 1992 and moved to Indiana where he worked in various jobs, including his sister's McDonald's franchise. He continued playing chess and traveled the country to compete in tournaments. His marriage fell apart in 1997, with Andrew Tate alleging that his father cheated on Eileen.

Emory's eccentric personality led 'Cobra' to "walk on eggshells" around his father, according to the controversial figure.

Emory Tate Jr. passed away in 2015 after suffering a heart attack at a chess tournament in California.
