UK's Josh Warrington once again finds himself with an opportunity to become a world champion as he faces Irish pugilist Anthony Cacace this Saturday, for the IBO super featherweight title.
Warrington a former world champion has lately been having a rough patch in his career. He is 1-3-1 in his last five. A win against Cacace seems like a non-negotiable for 'The Leeds Warrior', failing which he might need to wait a good while before landing another title shot.
Warrington vs. Cacace will go down on the undercard of the highly anticipated IBF heavyweight title clash between Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium.
Who is Josh Warrington?
Josh Warrington is a former two-time featherweight world champion from Leeds, England. He is the first fighter from the city to hold a major boxing world title. Aptly monikered 'The Leeds Warrior', he holds a professional boxing record of 31 wins against 3 losses and 1 draw.
Claiming his maiden major world title with a split decision win over Lee Selby in 2018, Warrington would then go on to defend the IBF featherweight strap thrice before vacating it in 2021 after he was denied a title unification fight with WBA champion Xu Can.
The 33-year-old once again captured his old title in a seventh-round TKO win over Kiko Martinez in the following year but lost it to Luiz Alberto Lopez in his very next fight.
This Friday he is faced with another title opportunity as he takes on Anthony Cacace for the IBF strap.
'The Leeds Warrior' is trained by his father Sean O'Hagan. Interestingly, O'Hagan was not a qualified trainer when he started training his son. Infact he used to be a driver by profession.
Sure enough, naysayers have cautioned the fighter that training under his father might hold him back in his career. However, Warrington, maintains that his father's tactics have worked well for him till now.
During an interview with The Athletic, he said:
"They'd tell me, he had no boxing experience, he didn't know anything, all of that... [But] what my father said to me made sense. He made things simple. He'd say 'Do X,' and it would work. Some trainers spoke in science equations."
The boxer is married to Natasha Warrington with whom he shares two daughters. The couple tied the knot in 2016 after being together for almost a decade. They welcomed their twins in 2018.
