Why was Alistair Overeem called 'Ubereem'?

Alistair Overeem was called 'Ubereem' during his time competing in Pride Fighting Championship, according to a 2011 article by Bleacher Report. Japanese fans took to calling him 'Ubereem' because of his body transformation from light heavyweight to heavyweight, where he packed on serious muscle.

These days, he is simply referred to as 'The Reem' despite his fight moniker being 'The Demolition Man'.

MMA fans, however, refer to the 'Ubereem' moniker for different reasons. Alistair Overeem is infamous for his steroid usage, which is probably why he packed on so much muscle. He failed a pre-fight drug test in his fight against Junior dos Santos at UFC 146, where his results showed a 14-to-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, whereas the permissible limit was 6-to-1.

In episode 981 of The Joe Rogan Experience with former UFC heavyweight Josh Barnett, Joe Rogan discussed the pre-USADA era of fighters and how the sport was being cleaned up at the time. Rogan specifically spoke about Overeem when the UFC heavyweight fought Brock Lesner, saying:

"How about Overeem when he fought Brock Lesner? How about when we saw 'The Reem' when he was 'Ubereem'. When he fought Brock Lesner - Jesus f*****g Christ. There is not a goddamned drug testing agent alive that would have been [like]: 'Grab him! Hold him down!'. He was so jacked. A part me of wishes that he would leave and just go back to Japan, and go right back to it."

Alistair Overeem has a UFC record of 12-8 and an overall MMA record of 47-19-1. 'The Demolition Man' last fought Alexander Volkov at UFC Fight Night 184, where he was knocked out in the second round. Incidentally, all his losses in the UFC have come by way of knockout, with the most infamous being the fight with Francis Ngannou. The heavyweight champion knocked Overeem out clean with an uppercut in round one.

Alistair Overeem was released from the UFC following his last fight and went on to compete in kickboxing at GLORY. Alistair Overeem has a kickboxing record of 11-4, of which seven were knockout wins while three were knockout losses.

Alistair Overeem tests positive for banned substances yet again

In his return to kickboxing, Alistair Overeem had his first fight against Badr Hari on October 8 at Glory: Collision 4. He won the fight via unanimous decision.

On November 21, it was reported that Overeem tested positive for a banned substance. However, his management claimed that it wasn't PEDs. According to De Telegraaf, Overeem's A-sample came back with positive results for the banned substance.

Overeem was expected to face the reigning GLORY heavyweight champion, Rico Verhoeven, following his win over Hari. However, due to the Dutch fighter testing positive for a banned substance, the fight will most likely not happen. Overeem's management is awaiting the B-sample results and has declined to comment any further.
