What's the story?

Heading into UFC Fight Night 140, there was only ever one favourite for the first fight of the main card between Cynthia Calvillo and Poliana Botelho. While Botelho was expected to win, mixed martial arts is not the most predictable of sports in the world.

Cynthia Calvillo showed why she was not a force to be underestimated when she took on her opponent in the fight and brought it to an end by the end of the 1st round.

In case you didn't know...

Cynthia Calvillo did not have the best year heading into the fight. Calvillo lost her last fight in December of 2017 and then was caught by the organisation for failing an in-competition drug test for marijuana metabolites.

She was handed a 6-month suspension which ended up being extended into a nine-month suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission. As if that was not enough, she lost one of her major anchors in her life, as her grandfather passed away.

Poliana Botelho came into the fight strong, as she looked to convert her five-fight win streak into a six-fight win streak.

The heart of the matter

It was looking good for Poliana Botelho heading into the fight as Calvillo looked extremely weak in the weigh-ins. She came in at a higher weight, and looked exhausted, almost fainting while she was on the scale.

However, once the fight started it was a completely different picture. She had enough time to recover and took down her opponent fast enough late in the first round. The fact that Botelho was dropped was enough for Calvillo to take advantage.

She locked in the Rear Naked Choke and that was it for her.

What's next?

Cynthia Calvillo finally has things going in her favour in the Octagon after a year of things going against her.

Calvillo will be looking for another win to establish her comeback.
