What’s the story?

UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and his biggest octagon rival Nate Diaz have been recently going back and forth against each other on social media, however, this past Saturday evening, in a rather surprising turn of events, McGregor decided to praise Diaz in an Instagram post and also evidently confirmed his interest in the McGregor-Diaz trilogy fight.

In case you didn’t know…

Ever since winning the UFC Lightweight Title back at UFC 205 in New York City, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor is yet to compete in an octagon fight following his triumphant win over Eddie Alvarez back in 2016.

On the other hand, title fights aside, McGregor’s rivalry with Nate Diaz in the UFC is probably one of the most historic rivalries in UFC history and is definitely considered as one of the most iconic feuds of this generation. The two men seemingly competed in their first fight back in March of 2016, when Diaz successfully managed to defeat the Irishman via second-round submission. McGregor, however, got his revenge over Diaz when he won the rematch at UFC 202 via unanimous decision.

The heart of the matter

In his recent Instagram post, Conor McGregor posted a few photos of him in the gym, working on his ground game when one of the casual fans decided to take a shot at “The Notorious One” by claiming that Nate Diaz capturing the mount over the UFC Lightweight Champion during their first fight was a better example of ground game.

McGregor then followed it up by responding to the fan in a rather shocking manner, as he shockingly displayed some good sportsmanship between him and Diaz and also paid respect to Diaz. McGregor wrote:

“Exactly. A truly beautiful position. The most intense position to be in under the lights of the entire world. Try and imagine what it would feel like. Amazing.”

Additionally, Conor also wrote that there is no rush to the Diaz trilogy fight and it will be a special moment when the fight eventually happens.

“Respect to Nate always, and our trilogy will be special when we do it 100%. There is no rush [Nate], our trilogy will show true to us for what we are. Warriors. And respect always … to the fans all around the world who support and recognize our work for what it is. The truest form of unarmed combat on Earth. This is as real as it gets. This is the UFC.”

What’s next?

Conor McGregor has also been recently going at it on social media against another one of his biggest adversaries that is Floyd Mayweather. There has recently been a lot of talks of Mayweather potentially stepping into the octagon in the near future and competing in a rematch against Conor McGregor.

However, as of right now, it looks like we will finally witness the return of Conor McGregor to the UFC for the first time in almost two years.

Author’s Take

McGregor and Diaz’s trilogy is what every combat sports fan around the world has been waiting for and I personally believe that a Lightweight Title fight between two men will be groundbreaking.
