Floyd Mayweather's uncle Roger Mayweather was one of the biggest influences on his career.

'Money' is considered one of the greatest boxers to ever lace up the gloves. However, he wouldn't have gotten there without the tutelage of his father and his uncle. Both Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Roger Mayweather had a massive influence on his career.

However, it was his uncle that was closer to the former champion. 'Black Mamba' was a professional boxer himself, and a very good one in fact. Roger competed from 1981 to 1999, compiling a 59-13 professional record. Along with that, he's a former multiweight champion.

In 2000, he became a full-time coach and began working with Floyd Mayweather. He would remain in that full-time trainer role for 12 years, ultimately having Floyd Mayweather Sr. replace him as the legend's full-time trainer.

Part of the reason why he became a less active trainer was due to health issues. While 'Money' wouldn't specify what the medical issues were, it was revealed that his uncle was dealing with deteriorating health, as well as diabetes, in 2015.

Five years on, Roger Mayweather passed away at the age of 58. Following his passing, 'TBE' opined that many of his uncle's medical issues were due to boxing.

Following the passing of his uncle, Floyd Mayweather paid tribute to Roger Mayweather.

For years, many fans wondered why 'Money' was trained by his uncle and not his father. On this, the legend stated that he wasn't trained by his father due to his legal issues.

Instead, 'Black Mamba' took him under his wing, and the two became quite close. Thanks to his uncle's guidance, Mayweather became one of the best boxers of all time. He ultimately retired after defeating Conor McGregor in 2017, with his father in his corner for a change.

In 2020, Roger Mayweather passed away, which naturally was a tough time for the former champion. Following his passing, the legend paid tribute to his former trainer. A section of the statement read:

“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring. Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us."
