India Gears Up For Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship

Thursday, July 28, 2011: With two rounds down and four to go, the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai will host the third round of the 2011 PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC), one of Asia’s most prestigious events for two-wheeler racing, which will kick off at the Sriperumbudur track from August 4 – 7.

This is the third consecutive year that Chennai will be hosting the event. Event promoter, Two Wheels Motor Racing (TWMR) Promotions Director, Ron Hogg commented, “We are delighted to have Chennai host the championship for the third year in the running. It’s a thrilling track and I am confident that the teams and riders will aim to make full use of the opportunity and secure a better position in the overall standings. We are offering spectators free admission for this outstanding race with the hope of further raising the interest for two- wheeler racing in India.”

Additionally, Ron also extended his thanks to the Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) management and looks forward to the continued support from the club for future races.

The Championship will see races in the Underbone 115cc and the Super Sports 600cc categories. At the end of first two rounds, Katsuaki Fujiwara of Manual-Tech Beet Kawasaki Racing tops the SuperSports 600cc overall standings with 100 points followed by Azlan ShahKamaruzaman of Boon Siew Honda Racing Malaysia with 72 points. At third place with 42 points is Doni Tata Pradita of Yamaha Indonesia Racing Team.

Meanwhile for the Underbone 115cc, Rafid Topan of Yamaha CKJ TJM Racing leads the standings with 75 points followed by Shahril Izzuwan Mohd Noor of Team PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha AHM with 58 points and Hadi Wijaya of Kawasaki NHK Rextor Manual Tech with 46 points.

The Chennai event is the only international two-wheeler racing event in India at present, with Krishnan Rajini of Moto-Rev India being the country’s sole representative in the Championship, competing in the SuperSports 600cc category. Meanwhile, in the Underbone 115cc category, there is also local participation with TVS Racing Team joining with a wildcard local rider and an import rider, from Malaysia for the race.

The 5th and 6th of August will see the riders go through the paces in the practice and qualifying sessions across categories, while the final races are scheduled for Sunday, August 7th from 10am until 5pm.
