Competitive motorsports returns to India, World Super Bike race scheduled in 2017

India last hosted a competitive international race in 2013

After a failed attempt at hosting a MotoGP race in 2013, India is now all set to join the World Super Bike calendar. The Buddh International Circuit will finally see a return of competitive motorsports, with a World Super Bike race scheduled there in the 2017 calendar.

After the cancellation of the Moto GP race in 2013 due to operational discrepancies, the FMSCI and Jaypee Sports have turned their attention to the World Super Bike Championship. Jaypee Sports International chief Sameer Gaur confirmed the deal today; he said, “We have signed the contract with WSBK for the race in 2017. We are contractually bound to host the race.”

Rumours of an imminent F1 return have also been doing the rounds, but officials were quick to confirm that SBK has their undivided attention. Gaur said, “As of now, we are only thinking about WSBK and F1 will return when the tax issue is settled.”

Due to tax disputes and bureaucratic roadblocks, the FIA had pulled India from their calendar in 2014. Apart from the World SBK championship race, regular domestic races will be a constant feature on the circuit’s yearly calendar.
