Shane van Gisbergen has rallied a remarkable two-year run in NASCAR that earned him a full-time seat. Per the Supercars’ Drivers’ Only podcast via Speedcafe, a fellow Supercars champion is looking to follow in SVG's footsteps by returning next year.
Will Brown, the 2024 Supercars champion, is reportedly aiming to secure two races in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. One of which is the Chicago street race where Shane van Gisbergen put his name on the map by winning in 2023.
Brown said on the Supercars’ Drivers’ Only podcast:
“Hopefully two NASCAR races. That’s the plan."
However, the 26-year-old Australian driver believes he would likely run one race only. He could return to the American stock car racing league with Richard Childress Racing, the team he drove for on his debut NASCAR race at Sonoma Raceway.
“I’ll say one, but hopefully two if the car’s available," Brown added.
The entry to the Chicago street race still depends on the availability of a seat, with Will Brown saying:
“Chicago is one I want to do but a lot of the guys over there want to do it, so it’s [a matter of] if a car is available, a team is available."
If the plan doesn't follow through, Brown considers driving in the Xfinity Series instead.
Will Brown won't likely enter the Sonoma and Watkins Glen road course races considering they coincide with two Supercars races. However, the Circuit of the Americas race in March won't clash with any stops in the Australian racing series.
The Grant Park 165 in the streets of Chicago is scheduled in July next year. If Brown secures a car for the race, he will go up against Shane van Gisbergen, who will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro for Trackhouse Racing full-time starting next season.
Shane van Gisbergen reflects on 2025 season following two-year stint as part-time driver
With Shane van Gisbergen set to make his full-time debut in the NASCAR Cup Series next year, the New Zealander driver reflected on his two-year run as a part-time driver. SVG admitted not expecting to sign a full-time seat this early in his NASCAR career, though he is excited for next year.
The 35-year-old driver said (via NASCAR):
“It’s been a pretty awesome 18 months."
“Yeah, it’s been a huge life change, as Justin [Trackhouse Racing owner] said, and everything he said was going to happen has happened. I never thought it would happen this quick and I’m very glad we’ve done the learning year this year in Xfinity. Kaulig Racing has been great to work with, and then also a lot more races to finish the year now," SVG added.
The 2023 Chicago street race winner concluded:
"Been a huge learning experience but just excited to get full-time in the Cup Series next year.”
For the 2025 Cup Series season, Shane van Gisbergen will compete alongside Trackhouse Racing teammates Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez.
