Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson's brother-in-law Brad Sweet has weighed in on their in-house rivalry. The duo birthed a winged sprint car series, High Limit Racing, and their venture kicked off in the 2023 season.
Sweet is a 3x defending champion of the World of Outlaws and brother of Larson's wife, Katelyn. On the other hand, Kyle has amassed 32 wins in the same discipline. Since kicking off their new venture, the brothers-in-law have been actively taking the business side of High Limit Racing to new heights.
However, being motorsports drivers, and from the same family, both are subject to in-house conversations about their racing prowess. Such discussions can birth rivalry among the family members, and Brad Sweet has addressed the situation, highlighting his relationship with Larson.
During a conversation with The Freak Nation, Sweet shared how he tries "to steal as much thunder" as he can when sitting next to the decorated NASCAR driver and discussing their High Limit Racing triumphs. He said (via SpeedFreaks on YouTube):
"The thing about Kyle is he's got the Indy 500, the Daytona 500, Cup races, so typically, I try to steal as much thunder as I can but he certainly has a lot to talk about and we give each other crap but a lot of the time, we're actually pretty proud of each other." (18.25)
"The one thing about Kyle is you'd say if he went to NASCAR, he never came back and raced dirt. You'd be able to talk a little more smack but the fact that he'll come back and race a late-model, a winged sprint car all within a week. It's hard to talk too much smack about the guy but I do try to get my shots where I can," Sweet added.
Kyle Larson glad to see his brother-in-law finishing fourth and not second at the season-opener High Limit Racing
The first dash of the 60-race schedule commenced at the East Bay Raceway Park and witnessed Kyle Larson and Brad Sweet as the frontrunners of the 30-lap feature.
As the race progressed, Sweet couldn't maintain his dominance and plummeted while Larson kept himself ahead of the pack. The 2021 Cup Series champion emerged as the winner of the inaugural run, whereas his brother-in-law finished fourth.
Kyle Larson cherished his sprint car race win but at the same time, highlighted his delight regarding Brad Sweet not finishing second. However, the NASCAR champ unfurled that his contentment is not because of rivalry, but due to the presumption that the brothers-owned High Limit Racing is "rigged."
Speaking on Sweet's missed runner-up spot, Larson said (via Speed Sport):
"I was glad to see him [Brad] not run second, because all the fans would think it's all rigged."
Brad Sweet has 91 wins in the World of Outlaws series and has a comfortable 59-win lead over Kyle Larson.
