Being a full-time black driver in the NASCAR Cup Series, Bubba Wallace Jr. has faced unwanted criticism both on and off the track.

The streaming giant Netflix released a documentary series named ’Race: Bubba Wallace' last month. The series has shown the 23XI Racing driver’s personal and professional life as well as shed light on the mental struggles and external expectations that came in his career.

In a recent interview with CBS News, he revealed his biggest and worst critics and went on to say:

“I am my own worst critic. You know, when I make a mistake, I’m super hard on myself. And sometimes it’s okay to have a little bit of self-motivation, but when you stoop as low as I do, it’s tough to climb back out of. But I think I’ve graduated from that point in my life hopefully. I haven’t made a big enough mistake to let my mind tell me otherwise.”

Bubba Wallace Jr. went on to say that he hopes fans get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a race car driver. He hopes to get better with what fans saw in the documentary series. Further adding to the conversation, Wallace said:

“It’s a lot, to be a race car driver. You get a glimpse of what it’s like. And that’s what I wanted to showcase for everybody tuning in. I wanted to show you how mentally, physically, emotionally, everything, draining that the sport is and what it takes to be successful. There are always people out there – ‘NASCAR isn’t a sport’. Well, you get to see otherwise in this docu-series.”

Bubba Wallace Jr.’s performance at 2022 Pennzoil 400

Driving the #23 Toyota Camry, Bubba Wallace Jr. finished 25th on last week’s Pennzoil 400 following a wreck during the race.

Erik Jones’ #43 Camaro got into an accident and started spinning in the middle of the track. Wallace was running in his path and had to make a split-second turn. His #23 Toyota Camaro deviated from the right angle to avoid minor contact with Jones. In doing so, Wallace had to force himself off the track and into their pit area.

Wallace, who finished runner-up at Daytona 500, is looking for his first win of the 2022 season. He stands in 10th place in the points table with 78 points and in the top-5.
