Alex Bowman had to settle with a DNF at the Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway. He has been struggling to finish consistently for two months now, which he acknowledged in a post-race interview after getting clearance from the infield care center.
In the last ten races, Bowman, driver of the #48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, has finished outside the top 25 seven times. The disappointing stretch started after he lost the lead to teammate Kyle Larson in the closing laps at Homestead-Miami Speedway due to a driver error.
During the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan, the 32-year-old Arizona native was running outside the top 20 when his car got tagged by the #41 Ford of Cole Custer. His #48 Chevy then hit the wall hard head-on, bringing out the red flag on lap 67.
Speaking about the race-ending incident, Alex Bowman said (via a press release from Chevrolet):
“It just looked like the #2 (Austin Cindric) got into the #41, or he was in a bad aero spot, something like that. The #41 got loose and at that point, being on the outside, when they get into you, you're just along for the ride. Really quickly turned the car into the outside wall and it was a massive crash.”
“Hate it for our #48 Ally Chevrolet team and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports. We just have to keep digging. It's been a really bad two months for us, but we just have to keep working hard,” he added.
While Bowman got his third DNF of the year, #11 Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin secured his third win. Chris Buescher came home in second place, followed by Ty Gibbs, Bubba Wallace, and Kyle Larson. Other HMS teammates, Chase Elliott and William Byron, finished 15th and 28th, respectively.
“We're a much better race team than this”: Alex Bowman on turning his season around
Despite struggling in the first half of the 2025 NASCAR season, Alex Bowman remains optimistic with the #48 Hendrick Motorsports team. He believes the car has a competent speed and that the team can provide support for his return to the front.
In the same press release, the eight-time Cup race winner said:
“We've had a lot of speed and a lot of good race cars.”
“They'll (Rick Hendrick, Jeff Gordon, and Hendrick Motorsports) give us the tools we need to get turned back around. We just needed to get pointed back in the right direction. We're a much better race team than this,” he added.

After the Michigan race, Bowman dropped one spot to 13th in the points standings, a stark difference from his teammates, who are all in the top five. The #48 driver has amassed two top-5s and seven top-10s, including two pole positions from Homestead-Miami and Bristol.
He will be back in action in the inaugural Mexico City race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The 100-lap road course showdown will kick off on June 15 at 3:00 p.m. on Amazon Prime.
