Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott is among the popular names in NASCAR. The 28-year-old has had an impressive career so far, that includes an Xfinity Series title in 2014 and a Cup Series title in 2020.
This season, Elliott finished the Cup Series in seventh position, winning the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. He had another ten finishes in the top five.
Apart from his racing prowess, Chase Elliott is also known for his calm demeanor and personality. However, he isn't always immune to intense emotions on the track. There are some moments when the calmest driver loses his cool while racing for the Cup Series title, including a memorable clash with his teammate.
On that note, let's take a look at three instances where Elliott got angry on the racetrack.
#3. Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott's 2017 feud at Martinsville
During the First Data STP race on Martinsville Speedway, Chase Elliott was eyeing his first win of that year's Cup Series and Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin spun him off the track, sending him into the guard rails. Both drivers were racing to secure their spots in the Championship Four race, but Hamlin's defense led Elliott to fall back to 27th place.
Chase Elliott went to Denny Hamlin and confronted him after the race was over, and in a post-race interview, Elliott gave his take on the whole situation and said:
"The funny thing was, he said somebody was pushing him, and it wasn't Kyle Larson, the next guy. My mom always said, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.' So he's not even worth my time. We're going on to Texas."
The Hendrick Motorsports driver got back to Hamlin and sent him into the walls at the Phoenix Raceway and finished fifth in the Cup Series standings while Hamlin ended sixth.
#2. Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott's post-race confrontation at Bristol in 2021
Chase Elliott encountered a "chicken move" from Kevin Harvick in the final stage of the Bristol race in 2021, leading to a post-race confrontation in the pits. Harvick made contact with Elliott with just 36 laps to end the race, resulting in a tire cut adding an unexpected pit stop for the HMS driver, costing him the win.
"I told him it was kind of a chicken (expletive) move that he did there at the end. We’re racing for the frickin’ win at Bristol. We’re three-wide in the middle, and he throws a temper tantrum. I was just trying to get the lead and race him hard. Then he pulls up in front of me and just sits there until I lose the whole lead," said Chase Elliott to Kevin Harvick.
The maneuver by the 2014 Cup Series champion helped him gain the lead. But neither of the drivers got the win despite leading the final stage. Harvick finished as the runner-up, and Elliott finished in 25th place, while Kyle Larson took the win.
#3. Chase Elliott's feud with teammate Kyle Larson at Watkins Glen in 2022
At the Go Bowling! race at Watkins Glen International track in 2022, Kyle Larson's last-minute aggressive maneuver cost Chase Elliott his win. During the last restart, with just five laps to go at turn 1, Larson overtook Elliott aggressively, sending him wide and resulting in a rivalry between the teammates. Larson secured his second victory at Watkins Glen.
The #9 Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver was upset about the move and talked about the incident with team owner Rick Hendrick and VP Jeff Gordon in the pits.
It doesn’t matter. The day’s done. Just thinking about (Daytona) and learning what I need to do to be good there. There’s nothing I can do about today now. So doesn’t matter, does it? And I’ll answer that for you. It does not. It doesn’t matter,” Elliott stated. (via NASCAR)
However, both drivers kept it professional during the interviews, and Elliott made a rare public display of his frustration.
