NFL insider namedrops two NFC teams "actively" chasing Patriots' no. 3 pick for QB in NFL Draft

New England Patriots Introduce Jerod Mayo as Head Coach
Patriots trade rumors in 2024 NFL Draft

The New England Patriots made major changes during the 2024 NFL offseason by moving on from Bill Belichick after more than two decades. They then promoted Jerod Mayo to become their next head coach, signaling the beginning of a new era.

The franchise is now rumored to be interested in a new quarterback as well, after also moving on from Mac Jones.

They will potentially have the opportunity to do so with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but they are apparently considering offers to trade out of their current spot.

NFL insider Adam Schefter recently appeared on an episode of the Pat McAfee Show to discuss the possibility of the Patriots trading down this year. He mentioned two NFC teams that are rumored to be aggressively pursuing the pick.

Schefter reported:

"The two teams in my mind that I've been able to ascertain that have been the most active in calling up to number three, have been the Minnesota Vikings, number one. And I think second, if we are going to quantify it, is the New York Giants."
"Those are the two teams that hae expressed an interest in moving up to number three. Now whether they can get up to number threeis a whole other issue."
"So if you're the Vikings, and I also think, I say Drake Maye but I also think that in a perfect world, the Vikings would have a high degree of interest, as would other teams, in Jayden Daniels. But I still think, as we talked about, that Daniels is the favorite to be number two."

The Chicago Bears are almost definitely locked into taking Caleb Williams with the number-one overall pick.

The Washington Commanders will presumably follow in search of either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. Whether it be the Patriots picking third, or another team that they trade the pick to, they will likely select one of the top three quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Much speculation has been made about the idea of the New England Patriots trading out of the number three overall pick. This could potentially be a result of them not being sold on Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.

They could theoretically target a different quarterback later and stock up on more draft picks for their rebuild in the process.

Schefter discussed this as well:

"They're going to listen to offers. Well, how about this, yeah, the Patriots are more likely to move their pick than the Commanders are, but I still think that he odds favor them staying where they are."

Finding a quarterback is essential in the long-term success of any franchise. Teams get few opportunities to select an elite prospect at the top of any draft, so it makes sense why the Patriots will likely stay at number three.

If they do happen to trade back, they could be targeting one of the options in the next tier of prospects, including JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix Jr.
