Elavenil Valarivan is an Indian woman shooter born on 2nd August 1999. She is a native of the Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu. Elavenil is an Air Rifle specialist and represents India internationally in 10m Air Rifle.
Elavenil Valarivan - Early Life, Family & Background
Elavenil Valarivan was born to a father, a Ph.D. Scholar and a scientist and her mother is a college principal. She was born in Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu and moved to Ahmedabad when she was 3-year-old. She has an elder brother who is serving in the Indian Army.
Elavenil took up an interest in shooting at the age of 13 after she met her father's friend’s daughter who was pursuing shooting. Initially, she tried shooting for fun, and eventually, she fell in love with the sport and began to pursue it seriously. Elavenil's shooting talent was quickly spotted while training at Sanskardham School DLSS in Ahmedabad and she was immediately drafted into Gagan Narang’s Gun for Glory academy.
Elavenil Valarivan was made a part of Gagan Narang’s ambitious plan Project Leap after realizing her true potential to be a great professional shooter. She is a graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Bhavan’s RA College of Arts and Commerce.
Elavenil Valarivan - Biography
After receiving professional training at Gun for Glory academy, Elavenil Valarivan's career began to take off. In 2015, she made her national championships debut at the National Shooting Championships in New Delhi, where she competed in 10m Air Rifle, 10m Air Rifle Junior, 10m Air Rifle Youth, 10m Air Rifle Women Senior, Junior, and Youth teams.
At the 2017 National Shooting Championships, Elavenil broke into national fame after she emerged as a surprise National Champion in Women 10m Air Rifle. The following year, she took home the Silver medal in 10m Air Rifle at the World University Sport Shooting Championship.
In 2019, Elavenil won the Gold medal in 10m Air Rifle Women by defeating the 2018 World Cup Gold-medalist Lin Ying-shin of Chinese Taipei at the Asian Airgun Championships in Taoyuan, Taiwan. She is the current World No.1 10m Air Rifle Women Shooter with a rating of 1475.
Elavenil Valarivan - Achievements
Elavenil Valarivan received her international breakthrough at the 2018 Junior World Cup, where she won the Gold medal in 10m Air Rifle Junior in Sydney, Australia, followed by two more Gold medals in 10m Air Rifle Junior and 10m Air Rifle Mixed Junior Team in Suhl, Germany. That year, in September, Elavenil won the Silver medal in 10m Air Rifle Junior at the World Shooting Championships.
In 2019, Elavenil bagged her 4th Gold medal in 10m Air Rifle Junior at the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. That year, she took home her first senior Gold medal in 10m Air Rifle at the ISSF World Cup in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, followed by another Gold medal in Women 10m Air Rifle at the ISSF World Cup Final.
In April 2021, Elavenil Valarivan was selected to represent India in her debut Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and she will compete in the Women 10m Air Rifle Individual event. At the 2021 ISSF World Cup, she clinched the Gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team in New Delhi.
