James Caan's cause of death was revealed as a heart attack by coronary artery disease.

Caan died of a heart attack at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 6, 2022, at the age of 82. At the time of his death, he had a number of health issues, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure. Cann was buried at Eden Memorial Park Cemetery. Numerous stars paid tribute to the late Caan, including Rob Reiner, Francis Ford Coppola, Barbra Streisand, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Talia Shire, Robert Duvall, and Will Ferrell.

James Edmund Caan was an American actor. He became well-known for his role as Sonny Corleone in Coppola's The Godfather in 1972. This role earned him nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. He played the same role in The Godfather Part II in 1974. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978.

Apart from that, Caan was also popular for numerous other films such as Howard Hawks's El Dorado in 1966, Robert Altman's Countdown in 1967 and Francis Ford Coppola's The Rain People in 1969. Caan was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role as Brian Piccolo in the 1971 television movie Brian's Song. Caan received Golden Globe Award nominations for his performances in the drama The Gambler in 1974, and the musical Funny Lady in 1975. He carried on his legacy and received significant roles in feature films such as Cinderella Liberty in 1973, Rollerball in 1975, A Bridge Too Far in 1977, Comes a Horseman in 1978, and Chapter Two in 1979.

After 1980, Caan’s films became more periodic, with performances including Thief in 1981, Gardens of Stone in 1987, Misery in 1990, Honeymoon in Vegas in 1992, Eraser in 1996, Mickey Blue Eyes in 1999, The Yards in 2000, City of Ghosts in 2002, Elf in 2003, and Get Smart in 2008.

James Caan was born on March 26, 1940, in The Bronx, New York City, to Sophie and Arthur Caan, Jewish immigrants from Germany. His father worked as a kosher meat salesman. Caan was one of three siblings who grew up in Queens. He went to school in New York City and later went to Michigan State University. He was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity while at Michigan State University. He wanted to play football but was not able to make the team at Michigan State. He later went to Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, but did not finish college.

While he was studying at Hofstra University, he became interested in acting. He was interviewed for a place at New York Cities Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, where he studied for five years.
