US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris canceled her election day speech as her opponent Donald Trump led the election with 267 electoral votes. The VP was scheduled to address her supporters at her alma mater Howard University on November 5, 2024.

However, Cedric Richmond, her campaign co-chair, announced Harris declined to speak at the event as votes were still being counted. He added that she would address the nation on November 6, saying:

“We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet. We will continue overnight, to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken. So, you won't hear from the vice president tonight. But you will hear from her tomorrow, she will be back here tomorrow, not only to address her supporters but also the nation."

Kamala Harris canceling her speech and all public appearances on Election Day was met with mixed responses on social media. Some netizens claimed it was "not right" of her to not address her supporters, with one person tweeting:

"How does she not address her supporters? That's not right."

Many accused Kamala Harris of being a "coward", alleging she was "freaking out" in her office about Trump leading in the polls.

"What kind of a coward does this to supporters?" one person tweeted.
"I can picture her freaking out in her office," another person added.
"Kamala Harris didn’t even come out to tell her own supporters thank you and to go home. I mean wow. What a “leader” she is haha," someone commented.
"This is why they lose. No conviction. Poor leadership. And no heart in kamala," another netizen wrote.

Harris supporters also expressed unhappiness at Kamala Harris trailing behind Trump in the polls.

"I’m genuinely depressed, sad day for America," one person tweeted.
"Another sad night in America!" someone else added.

However, others wondered why Harris canceled her speech, alleging she and her team would attempt to rig the election overnight.

"Her victory speech will be in the morning they just “found” more ballots from California sent to Pennsylvania," one person tweeted.
"They want everyone to go home. Democrats will try to rig the count overnight— we cannot let that happen," another user wrote.

Donald Trump is projected to win the race against Kamala Harris

According to a live presidential forecast by The New York Times, Republican candidate Donald Trump is projected to win the election against Kamala Harris. While votes are still being counted, Trump leads the race with 267 electoral votes at the time of writing this article.

Kamala Harris secured 224 electoral votes, with at least 270 needed to win the election. Trump, who won in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina, reportedly needs one more swing state win to become the next US president.

Kamala Harris' team is reportedly still hopeful. According to CNBC, Jen O'Malley Dillon, her campaign director, wrote in an email to the staff that “we have known all along that our clearest path to 270 electoral votes lies through the Blue Wall states.”

“We feel good about what we’re seeing," she added.

The Blue Wall states refer to Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, accounting for 44 electoral votes. However, Trump's win in Pennsylvania earned him 19 votes, further boosting his lead.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump gave his victory speech in Florida early on November 6. He vowed to fight for the American people, adding God spared his life "for a reason."

"Every single day, I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body. I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve."

The final result of the 2024 US Presidential race is yet to be announced.
