As news spread of Donald Trump being just four electoral votes away from the presidency, netizens claimed that The Simpsons' prediction about Kamala Harris winning was wrong. In a viral X post shared on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, user @kirawontmiss wrote:
"This is the first time The Simpsons were wrong."
For the unversed, the animated comedy show is known for its alleged uncanny ability to depict future events years before they occur. In days leading up to the elections, many claimed that an episode from 2000, titled Bart to the Future, predicted that Kamala Harris would be POTUS.
Internet users were quick to react to the X post. Many quipped that the show never mentioned a year, adding that it was probably predicting the next tenure. One even suggested it might not be referencing Kamala Harris. Here are some comments under @kirawontmiss' post:
"They didn’t mention which year though. Maybe next tenure," one commented.
"We’re they tho? it’s still time left," another suggested.
"3rd time the charm, it’s going to be a different woman or Kamala again," a user added.
Others noted that The Simpsons "failed" this time and that it had been wrong many times in the past as well.
"Simpsons workin hard, But trump workin harder," a netizen joked.
"The Simpson time travel machine failed this time," another added.
"Simpsons has been wrong many times but the fact a cartoon predicated somethings write overshadow the wrong predictions," a user stated.
The Simpsons' episode allegedly predicting Kamala Harris would become president resurfaced in July 2024
The Simpsons episode in question, Bart To The Future, features the character of Lisa Simpson as the president and Donald Trump as the ex-POTUS. During a speech given from the Oval Office, she namedrops Donald Trump, stating:
"As you know, we've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump."
Lisa is seen wearing a purple suit with a pearl necklace and pearl earrings, which mirrored Kamala Harris' outfit when she was sworn in as the first female Vice President in 2021.
Meanwhile, in 2017, just a week after Donald Trump took office, the running blackboard gag from the show (the opening sequence which shows Bart Simpson writing a phrase on the blackboard repeatedly as a punishment) read, "Being right s*cks."
The episode from 2000 first resurfaced after Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Kamala Harris. At the time, The Simpsons creator Al Jean took to his X to share a side-by-side comparison of Lisa and Harris in the purple suit, writing:
"@TheSimpsons ‘prediction’ I’m proud to be a part of."
At the time, several netizens had claimed Harris would become president.
On the other hand, several world leaders have come out to congratulate Donald Trump for winning the U.S. presidential elections. This includes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Notably, Trump is leading with 267 electoral votes and needs 270 to win, as of the time of writing. Trump won key battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina.
