On September 3, 2025, an unusual case was filed in Indianapolis when a lawyer named Mark Steven Zuckerberg sued Meta Platforms, Facebook's parent company. The attorney claimed that the company had suspended his accounts multiple times because he shares the same name as the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

As reported by NY Post, filings in Marion Superior Court, the Indiana-based bankruptcy attorney Mark Steven Zuckerberg has alleged in court filings that Facebook shut down both his business and personal accounts numerous times. He stated that it was due to a false belief by the social media platform that he was impersonating the billionaire founder.

The case was officially registered as Mark S. Zuckerberg v. Meta Platforms, Inc. It highlights the growing tension between automated moderation systems and actual users who are affected by identity verification errors.

The court documents indicate that Mark Steven Zuckerberg, who has been practicing law in Indiana for decades, began having issues with Facebook shutting down his accounts as early as 2010. His business account has been disabled 5 times and his personal account 4 times since then.

In May 2025, Mark Steven Zuckerberg's professional law firm page was suspended once again, although he had submitted appropriate verification documents. These recurring acts, according to the complaint, interfered with the online advertising of his practice and client communication, inflicting financial and reputational damages.

According to attorney Zuckerberg, his law firm has lost about $11,000 in advertising money due to the shutdown. As reported by WTHR, he compares the experience to:

"It's like buying a billboard on the side of the highway, paying the people for the billboard and then they come and put a giant blanket over it and you don't get the benefit of what you paid for. It's not fair. it's not right and they need to stop."

The suit charges negligence and contract breach, including an injunction to stop further suspensions, full reimbursement of lost advertising fund, attorney’s fees, and, in one request cited in his filings, a public apology from the company.

The attorney mentioned that he had followed all the directions given in the course of the appeals, but still had to wait months before his accounts were reinstated, the latest being almost six months. He explained to the Indianapolis local news agency, 13News:

“They have more money and more lawyers and more resources than I do. I’d rather not pick a fight with them, but I don’t know how else to make them stop!” the lawyer.”

He further added:

“For somebody who purports to be one of the leading tech companies in the world, and they can’t stop doing this? And they can’t seem to get their appeal process to work? I think they have a problem.”

Meta has noted the issue and explained that the affected account was mistakenly disabled and subsequently restored. A spokesperson at the company affirmed to Axios that Meta was “working to prevent this from happening again,” but did not explain why the suspensions still occurred across the years.

Mistaken identity leads to threats and false assumptions

The attorney’s unusual position, sharing a name with one of the most recognized figures in technology, has brought both personal inconvenience and public attention.

On his own website, iammarkzuckerberg.com, he records the different false identities and hate speech he has received over the years. It includes people seeking tech help and those who have also sent him death threats, mistaking him for the Meta CEO.

His defense team states that it is not the name of one lawyer that is being judged. However, Meta's dependence on automated systems overlooks the fact that there are honest users with the same names as well-known personalities.

At the beginning of September 2025, Mark Steven Zuckerberg's case is still pending in Marion Superior Court, though no hearing date has been announced as yet. A successful lawsuit would compel Meta to systemically change the manner in which it authenticates accounts, especially in situations involving name duplication.
