Salt Bae was born to a Kurdish family in Paşalıa which is a village located in the Şenkaya district of Erzurum Province. His father was a mineworker and used to earn not very well. Due to the family's bad financial conditions, Gökçe was forced to leave school in the sixth grade and begin working as a butcher's apprentice in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul. As he grew, Gökçe roamed several countries where he worked in local restaurants for free just to gain experience as a cook and a restaurateur.


After gaining much experience, he returned back to Turkey and opened his first restaurant 'Nusr-Et' in Istanbul in 2010. His restaurant did gain some traction in the start but Gökçe and his restaurant propelled to fame in January 2017 when a video of him uniquely seasoning the meat with salt became highly viral on the internet. In just a matter of a day, his video began making rounds on the internet and people began making memes of him "suavely" cutting meat and sprinkling salt. His video also made it to Twitter and the video was viewed 10 million times on Instagram. This is how Nusret Gökçe was dubbed 'Salt Bae' for his unique way of dropping salt on the dish.
