ISSF World Cup Final Day 3: Three gold medals for India as shooters break barren run

Day 3 began on a fruitful note for the Indian shooting contingent at the ISSF World Cup Final in Putian, China as the medal drought was finally broken.

The day's action started off with the qualification round of the Men's 10 metre Air Pistol event as three shooters - Saurabh Chaudhary, Shahar Rizvi and Abhishek Verma were in the running for a spot in the medal round.

Abhishek Verma and Saurabh Chaudhary shot well from the get-go and managed to make the cut for the final eight positions past the qualification round. Shahar Rizvi bowed out of the competition after finishing on the 12th spot.

Saurabh Chaudhary scored a total of 581 in the qualifiers to end up on the 7th position whereas fellow countryman Abhishek Verma topped the field with a score of 588.

However, both of them missed out on a podium finish in the Final round as Abhishek Verma slotted in at the 5th spot with a score of 179.4 with Saurabh Chaudhary following up behind him in at the 6th position with his score of 159.8.

The Women's 10 metre Air Pistol event saw Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Deswal compete in a field of 18 shooters.

Both the young shooters started well and managed to make it past the qualification round into the final medal round with an identical score of 578. Yashaswini grabbed the 7th spot followed by Manu at the 8th on account of having shot more number of inner 10s.

Yashaswini Deswal had a decent start to the final round but slowly fell behind and got eliminated as the sixth-placed shooter with her final score at 158.8.

On the other hand, Manu Bhaker began the medal round on a strong note and stayed ahead of the competition through the elimination stage as well. Bhaker clinched the gold medal beating out the challenge from Serbian shooter Zorana Arunovic to mark India's first medal at the ISSF World Cup Final in China.

Manu Bhaker broke the World Junior Record (244.7) in Women's 10 metre Air pistol on her way to winning the gold medal and becomes the second Indian shooter after Heena Sidhu to win a gold medal in the event at an ISSF World Cup.

The next event was the Women's 10 metre Air rifle saw four Indian shooters - Apurvi Chandela, Elavenil Valarivan, Anjum Moudgil and Mehuli Ghosh take up the challenge of going for India's second medal in Putian.

The qualification round of six series of shots began well for the Indian shooters but as the rounds drew to an end, Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela fell behind and bowed out of contention with their scores of 624.9 and 622.7 respectively.

Mehuli Ghosh (629.3) and Elavenil Valarivan (631.1) made the cut for the medal round finishing at the 6th and 2nd ranks respectively.

The final round of competition saw both the young shooters give their best but Mehuli Ghosh bowed out at the sixth position after three rounds of elimination with a score of 163.8

Elavenil Valarivan upped her game and stayed on course for a podium finish and managed to get the gold medal beating Chinese Taipei's Ying-Shin Lin with a score of 250.8, edging out her opponent by a margin of 0.1. This was the second gold medal for India at the ISSF World Cup Final in China.

The final Indian contender of the day was Divyansh Singh Panwar who took the field in the Men's 10 metre Air Rifle Men event.

Panwar went up against 15 competitors in a qualification round of six series of shooting and managed to make the cut for the medal round with a good score of 627.1. The young Indian shooter was at the 3rd spot after the end of the qualification round.

The medal round began with a field of eight shooters but the young Divyansh was up for the challenge. At the end of the 1st competition stage, he had a score of 104.1 beginning on a good note before the elimination stage. Panwar carried the momentum into the elimination stage and consistently shot at scores of 10.3 and above to stay in contention for a podium finish.

Panwar was assured of a medal after five rounds of elimination but was at the second position behind Hungary's Istvan Peni for the initial four rounds of the elimination stage. He raised his game and jumped into the top spot as the competition drew to an end. Panwar needed a final shot of at least 9.8 to secure the gold medal after Peni had ended his run with a score of 250.0.

Divyansh Singh Panwar managed to shoot an exact 9.8 to secure the gold medal with his score of 250.1 and make it three on the day for the Indian shooters.

The third day of action at the ISSF World Cup Final in Putian, China saw the Indian shooters break the duck of medals and grab three gold medals, including a junior world record score from Manu Bhaker.

The fourth and final day of action will see the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event as the ISSF World Cup Final draws to an end in China.
