A day before the announcement of their Ashes squad, Ben Stokes, England’s all-rounder, was arrested by police in connection with an incident involving the assault of a 27-year-old in Bristol. While the incident might seem unusual for cricketers of international repute, Stokes isn't the first to be embroiled in this sort of a controversy. #1 Vinod Kambli

Vinod Kambli and his wife were accused of assaulting their maid

Former Indian cricketer, Vinod Kambli was arrested in August 2015, along with his wife. A FIR charged against him and his wife was lodged by their maid. In her complaint, the maid revealed how Kambli and his wife assaulted her when she went to ask for her salary.

The FIR thoroughly described how the left-handed batsman beat her up, locked her in a room and warned her to never come back. The batsman who once opened the batting for India with Sachin Tendulkar, completely denied the allegations claiming that the maid did not have proper identity proof.

#2 Makhaya Ntini

South African speedster Makhaya Ntini, was arrested for his involvement in a sexual assault controversy in 1998. The cricketer was arrested for raping a woman from East London. However, Ntini escaped a six year jail term, as the court proceedings could not prove him guilty. He was in jail for a short period of time. According to reports, fans of the first black player to play for the Proteas celebrated outside the court as Ntini was released.

He has a fantastic career record of bagging 309 wickets from the 101 tests he featured in and 266 wickets from 173 matches in the 50 over format of the game. Ntini has also been a part of the Indian Premier League, playing for Chennai Super Kings.

Shane Warne married Elizabeth Hurley for a very short time

Shane Warne was not only known for his ability to turn the cricket ball but also for his controversies off the field. In 2003, Warne’s career as a cricketer had been threatened, as he was held responsible for sending lewd text messages to a South African woman. The allegations were not proved by either Warne or Cricket Australia as Warne asked took legal help to get himself out of the situation.

Warne was also spotted kissing Playboy cover girl, Emily Scott. The leg spinner’s short term marraige with Liz Hurley was also talked about.Warne was known for his many adventures and misadventures with women throughout his career, and was last spotted kissing Playboy cover girl Emily Scott.

#4 Navjot Singh Sidhu

Navjot Sidhu went behind the bars after involving himself in a road rage accident in 1988

Former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu and his aide Rupinder Singh Sandhu killed a man in a road rage accident in 1988. The one-time Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Sidhu, got into a fight with 50-year old Gurnam Singh who was the victim of the accident. They were accused of beating up the old man, following a brawl over a road incident.

Unfortunately, Gurnam died on his way to the hospital, and Sidhu was in danger of facing a 10 year sentence.

#5 Peter Roebuck

Roebuck committed suicide when arrested for sexual assault

The British born Roebuck was the centre of a sexual assault scandal in 2011, which took away his life.

In November, 2011, Roebuck was arrested from his Hotel room in Southern Sun Hotel in Cape town for sexually assaulting a Zimbabwean man. police officers entered Roebuck’s hotel room in Southern Sun Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa, to arrest him on charges of sexually molesting a Zimbabwean man.

Realizing the consequences of the arrest, and what effect it would have on his reputation, Roebuck jumped out of his window from the sixth floor and ended his life.

#6 Luke Pomersbach

Luke Pomersbach was arrested during the IPL

In the much controversial IPL (in 2012), Aussie cricketer Luke Pomersbach was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman from the US. Not only did Luke, molest the woman but followed it up by beating up her boyfriend. Later, the Australian was suspended from the remaining games of the tournament.

He was a part of Vijay Mallya’s Royal Challengers Bangalore and Preity Zinta’s Kings XI Punjab. The left handed batsman pulled out of cricket in 2014, citing physical and mental health issues.

#7 Wasim Akram (with three others)

Wasim Akram was arrested on the beach along with his fellow team mates, suspected of drugs

During Pakistan’s tour of West Indies in 1993, Akram along with Waqar Younis, Aqib Javed and Mushtaq Ahmed were arrested on the beach for possessing an illegal drug, which was thought to be marijuana. The police tested the drug later but initially thought it was marijuana.

They were released on bail and the police commissioner, Nestor Ogilvy, was unable to say when the case would be heard.

Witnesses said the arrest was made by an off-duty policeman jogging on the beach. According to the policemen, no drugs were found on the players or anyone in their company but the substances were found close by.

#8 Shahadat Hossain

Shahdat Hossain caught by policemen, for beating up a 11 year old girl

Fugitive Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain was remanded in jail on October 5 this year shortly after he surrendered to a court over allegations of beating his 11-year old maid, his lawyer said. The 38-year old Hossain was finally arrested by police, after he managed to hid three weeks, escaping the police. He was charged for physically abusing a girl who was appointed as a maid illegaly.

The cricketer has played 36 tests and 51 ODI’s for bangladesh, picking up 70 and 47 wickets respectively.

#9 Mohammad Asif

Mohammad Asif wasdetained for carrying drugs

Pakistan speedster Mohammad Asif was arrested during his prime in Dubai on charges of possessing illegal drugs. The cricketer was returning after his debut IPL tenure. According to reports, Asif was carrying opium.

The cricketer was detained at the Dubai airport. Asif faced 19 days of detention for carrying the drug, though he claimed that he was unaware of what it was and last used it four months before. Asif told investigators that he had been using the substance for energy and blood pressure control and it had been prescribed to him by a local Hakeem.

#10 Rubel Hossain

Rubel Hossain of Bangladesh was taken into custody for raping charges

A Bangladeshi fast bowler, Rubel Hossain was accused of rape by his girlfriend, who was also an actor by profession. The woman said that Rubel had not honoured his promise of marriage, after getting intimate with her.

Following the complaint, the bowler was held by the police before the start of the ICC World Cup in Australia. Bangladesh Cricket Board saved the cricketer, securing his release on grounds of “national interest”.

The woman finally took back the charges, after the World Cup, where Rubel gave his everything and performed well.
